do you use qjackctl ?
use either 2 or 3 periods (depends on soundcard)
use a framecount of 1024 for the beginning. (if it works, try to halve
it step by step)
be shure jackd is running. ( it is, if the command "pidof jackd"
returns a number )

example:
/usr/bin/jackd -R -P88 -t1000 -dalsa -r48000 -p1024 -n2 -D -Xseq
(-R and -P may require a realtime kernel)
