[LAU] Awkward intermittent bug

I should add that starting pulseaudio from the command line gives:

W: alsa-util.c: Device hw:1 doesn't support 44100 Hz, changed to 16000 Hz.
W: alsa-util.c: Device hw:1 doesn't support 2 channels, changed to 1.

where hw:1 is my mike. The same works whatever I put in
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf. I guess the mike just only provides one sample
rate. So, how can I make the rest of my system etc. use 16000 Hz?
