[LAU] How do I get synth plugins to show up in rosegarden?

Indeed that's right. There is a fluydsynth-dssi which can operate as a 
synth device in rosegarden.
Additionally you would be using rosegarden simply as a midi "generator" 
plugging its midi output into the various synths. This has its pros and 
cons of course.
