what is odd is that firewire audio/video is reported to work out of the
box on Ubuntu 10.10
and I don't want to upgrade to Jack2 since Synaptic wants to wipe all my
audio apps with the install
not sure why this is unless none of the apps support Jack2 in which case
I'll pass on installing it

I'm going to buy an Expresscard -> Firewire adapter and see if that
works -- something about the 1394 connector on the Dell laptop makes me
suspicious for some reason
