Well, ffmpeg probably can do the same thing. The problem with ffmpeg for me is 
_me_: it has so many parameters (about 4.3 zillion) that I keep forgetting 
which ones to use.

Also, I used sox recently for something else, so it was the first thing that 
came to mind.
