That sounds like a really good suggestion!

However further investigation leads me to believe that neither the vst 
nor the dssi plugins came with my binary linuxsampler installation.

I tried building linuxsampler from cvs, thinking that might be the way 
forward for the plugins to get installed, but it fails like this:

checking for GIG... no
Required libgig version not found!
You need to have libgig version 3.3.0 installed!

Strange, since I just installed libgig 3.3.0...
