Thanks Jeremy -- that got it working.
I actually seem to need only two commands:
cd /usr/share/alsa/firmware/usx2yloader/
fxload -s ld2-ezusb.hex -I us122fw.ihx -D /dev/bus/usb/003/002
sudo modprobe snd-usb-usx2y

The strange thing is that it does not work if the tascam is plugged in
at machine startup.
I must remember to unplug it, boot, login and plug it in.
Any clues about this?
