This screencast shows two programs running together: vmpk and musescore 
(http://musescore.org)

Musescore shows the staff notation, and is the program playing the piece. The 
MIDI output of musescore can be connected to the input of vmpk (for instance, 
using qjackctl). The other way around (note entry from vmpk into musescore) is 
possible as well: http://musescore.org/en/node/8000
