I have only been using jackd with the alsa back end for a short amount of
time (been a ffado user for many years). I am also dealing with a friends
cheap laptop which is having issues; basically the order of the alsa
devices is changing with every boot which means I have to configure jack
every time I want to use it.
Is there any way to get jack to remember the description of the device
rather than the number and search for that description on startup (then use
the device number if that fails). This would seem to me like a much saner
way of doing things to me.

Thanks looks like I need to look at what it would take to have the gui
front end (Cadence) behave this way by default

Hi Danni,
Another approach is to force the ALSA (or actually the kernel) to assign
persistent indexes to your cards. This is done through modprobe options.
See the post here

(in French).
Basically, you edit (and/or create) /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to
look like this:
options snd-usb-audio index=0 # this ensures that your usb card
comes in first
options snd-hda-intel index=1 # if you have an intel card...
You can list all the modules which are used by sound devices on your
computer by running " sudo lsmod | grep snd" this into a terminal. You
can set the index number for all of them, and then Jack should find them
always in the same place. This works even for software were you only
have a dropdown list with card index numbers (where method in
http://jackaudio.org/device_naming does not work).
If you have several usb cards, they will all use snd-usb-audio, but you
can still preset their indexes by specifying vendor/product numbers...
This is explained in detail in the post mentioned above. Please tell me
if you need an English translation.
After editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, make sure you either rmmod
then modprobe the corresponding modules, or reboot.

So youalso decided for the rather dry and small version, what I call
singer/songwriter sound. did you add any reverb at all? If so, it was done
very subtlely. For my liking it's a little to narrow in the stereo panorama.
did you apply EQ'ing and/or filtering to the instruments?
It's certainly a mix to listen to. But it still feels a little bass heavy
(maybe around the good old 150Hz point, but not sure). It's definitely a
working mix, in contrast to a working-mix, if you catch my meaning. Still I
feel, that you might have used reverb a little more liberally overall.
compression seems allright. In the beginning I had the feeling, that it
sounded overcompressed, but that quickly disappated. If the sounds had a
little more room to breathe, I feel, that it would also be transparent enough.
So basically frequencies seem OK.
But now, that all five mixes are supposedly in, I'd still vote for Jason's
mix a smy favourite. Due to the drums of course, but also due to the general
atmosphere, the room, the EQ'ing. Perhaps not totally faithful, to what there
was originally, but very pleasant to the ear of the beholder, in that case
being me. :-) No slamming of any other mix, there wasn't any mix among them,
which I would happily take and listen to again. They were all in their own
ways faithful to the piece.

Hey, Julien, thanks for the response.
Yes, there is reverb on everything: jconvolver for the instruments, and
a plate on the vocals, but very conservatively applied, as you noted. I
was going for an accoustic or small venue feel, which I felt was best
suited for this song; but that's an aesthetic, which means subjective,
decision.
The stereo field is indeed narrow: I tried widening it, but didn't like
the result, so I stuck to something more crowded.
There is EQ on most things, guitar especially. I agree about the
low-mid hump, wwhich is the only thing I would have further refined when
listening to the mix again today after a couple days rest. Low-mids were
one of the challenges in this mix: I removed a fair bit, but perhaps
could have removed a touch more. On the other hand, I feel the low-mid
punch gives a bit of a balsy feel which is not entirely unpleasant, but
does not necessarily translate well in every speaker/headphone.

Hm, maybe you might have gone with some different compression on the bass
and thus tried to keep the low-midhump more behaved. I don't know.
The reverb is very modestly applied. A touch more might not have been bad,
same room sizes, IR-reverbs. But that's all personal taste.
For the widening of the parnorama. You might have experimented with some
very short stereo delay on the tracks, thus keeping some glue on a very
reduced level. Delay length between 12-18ms. I've had good experiences with
the etd and 2143. Lately the latter is my favourite, I have more control over
it.
Did you apply some highpass filter to the guitars? You could you know, same
for the vocals. probably take a filter with a shallow slope, seeing, that the
arrangement is that small.

A quick note regarding the other mixes. I'm working on a Web page that
includes links to all the mixes, hopefully the page will include a form
for feedback. I also plan to make the session and stems publicly
available, perhaps users of other DAWs (non-Linux even) will take a
