[LAU] Switching jackd between mpd/vlc + volume control

I'd like to be able to use jackd with both mpd at 44.1k and vlc at
48k.  I've been doing this by killing jackd and starting it with a
different rate specification and connecting to the new ports with
jack_connect.  Is there a better way?

What would you guys recommend for controlling the ALSA volume on one
machine via another machine?  There is a network link between the
machines, but the only protocol connecting them now is netjack.
