The last three NICs I bought had a Linux directory on the cd/floppy with
kernel drivers for the card. I suspect the card manufactures did not
create the drivers but just lifted them from the work already done for
free, but it was there. I did not have to use those drivers though as the
system I had just worked with the kernel I had.  I can't say who did the
actual work or how... just that it seems NICs are no longer a problem...
perhaps networking is so important to computer work that there are more
FOSS devs willing to work on the drivers than there are for odd audio
devices.
