Nted (succeeds Noteedit) is quite useful and useable. Can do most anything. 
Can preview engraving; a few quirks.
Mscore (musescore) is gorgeous but its UI can be hard to navigate. WYSIWYG.

Gnu Denemo is one designed to feed Lilypond/Frescobaldi but I have not found 
it usable.
