[LAU] Updated system, now refuses to load snd-usb-audio and module for onboard sound

For reference, I just shutdown and powered back on, and now aplay -l 
lists the onboard sound but not the USB card. The log shows USB card 
being found and setup.

At the same time, my external USB drive is showing a solid red 
(reading/writing) light but the system log reports it not responding.
