Good point!  Unfortunately, while I do tend to record hardware effects 
when I'm tracking (and put the effects outputs on separate tracks so 
they can be blended freely later), the problem is that if I need to do 
more afterward, it gets hard to make myself bounce out to the hardware 
world again.  Once it's in the computer, I'm in a world of plugins...so 
lazy I am.  :)

But yes, I suppose you can get that from a real tape deck.  I might 
mention though that the UA plugins emulate a Studer deck...something I 
certainly will never own or want to take care of.

Next you're going to tell me that if I want to write messages to people, 
I can do that with paper and pencil!  (omg...I can!  I really can!)
