not when you have a matrix of 64x64 controls, or worse, 128*128 controls.
finding the right control in the middle of 4096 or 16384 entries?

this is why amixer doesn't actually represent matrix controls in its
output, although you can use it to set specific matrix values if you know
how to name them.
