You mentioned the formats problem. What codecs does your camera use?
If you need to do non-linear editing on a format which Cinelerra doesn't 
handle, you could first convert the video to a lossless format like 
dv/pcm in an avi container. Probably any video editor will handle that. 
You may also find that it will be more stable as it is an older and more 
"standard" format than h264/aac in mp4.

I usually transcode videos with avidemux. It's a bit picky with some 
h264 video streams. If it offers you a "safe mode" on opening those 
files, you may find it's actually more stable without. Other than that, 
I found it to be quite powerful. It handles a wide range of codecs in a 
versatile way. You can choose for example to rencode just the audio or 
just the video or to simply cut a chunk in both streams without 
reencoding at all (very fast and preserves quality). I also use it to 
burn subtitles in the video, crop, deinterlace, and some other small 
effects. If it doesn't work on your file, you could try ffmpeg, avconv 
or mencoder from commandline.
