we are working on ways to control the number of outputs from "multichannel"
(>2) plugins.

the control you've seen is Ardour's VBAP panner. it exists because you have
multiple channels and so a normal panner cannot be used. You can't use it
with tracks/busses with <3 outputs, and you wouldn't want to. It is
generally best to forget that the VBAP panner exists, especially when it
comes to multi-output plugins (which are themselves a horrible abberation.
