[LAU] Crackles in audio - how to troubleshoot ?

The machine was power cycled and now all audio is just fine... until
next time.  I start to notice this, these crackle suddenly happening,
from time to time.  I have a hunch this is linked to Bitwig doing
something not right, although up to now I have no evidence of that.
What could make the audio, from playing fine, suddenly be full of
crackles, and for all applications at that ?
