Consider this.  Hitting the skin (it is a drum skin, on mine I have a
Remo Black Suede) with your nails will produce a slightly different
sound than with the fingers.  Part of the DSP processing picks up the
sound from the skin.  This is why the instrument can produce feedbacks
on a stage.
