[LAU] [OT] Instrument identification

Hey hey,
please excuse the digression, but I just heard this percussive instrument:

and couldn't identify it. Internet research using the title of the production 
was no help and it's so old that there wouldn't be much - if any - help from 
the label.

Does someone know what this instrument might have been?
