I suspect the dpkg-reconfigure hint won't work for you. There must be a<br>
setting for your user session, that does not require a password, to<br>
change the keyboard layout for the user session. Perhaps the log in<br>
screen does provide a language setting. Or how about<br>

<div class="PlainText">As the keys gives the right result in xfce4-terminal I'm pretty sure the keys were working with the characters I expected, it would be rather weird for one window to use one charset and another window a different one when I have deleted
the original charset so only one exists for the keyboard I actually have....</div>
