And of course much of the information available from linuxaudio.org can be traced back to various email-list discussions, LAC sessions, etc.

Of course. All Music is Audio; but not all Audio is Music :)
I've updated the description on http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/planet
> FL(libre)OSS is much more than just Linux(imho)...
Indeed. we've been discussing this over and over again the last years.
On that note: many Linux-Audio apps also run on OSX or BSD these days..
However, "Linux" is a well-known established name, that many
non-technical people know and associate with the spirit of "FLOSS".
Other reason for sticking to the current name (LinuxAudio) are
old-timers (Linux rulez) and nitpickers (the last "S" in FLOSS stands
for Software, or we should become GNU/Linux-audio). We've actually
already registered a few new DNS entries including "libre.." but reached
the conses that linuxaudio.org will stay linuxaudio.org for a few more
years.
On that note, there will be a round-table at the upcoming Linux Audio
Conference, discussing these issues. If you're not able to attend the
conference, feel free to join in with the A/V streams and contribute by IRC.
> It would have a more broader base of blog writers
We're not really targeting bloggers; the core of linuxaudio.org is and
will be the mailing-lists. The motivation for that is that the quality
of content and discussions is much higher there than that of the usual
blogs & comments or forums.

You're not far off. I'm in the admin but actually this is responsibility
of the Linux-Audio consortium (CC).

Hi again,
Since 6pm UTC today linuxaudio.org is hosted on a new server (actually a
VM).
Due to slowly failing hardware on the old machine were urged to perform
the migration ahead of schedule and were unable to send out a
notification about it beforehand.
The hosting is (still) provided by by the Virginia Tech, Department of
Music and Digital Interactive Sound & Intermedia Studio. Many thanks to
Ico Bukvic. Daniel James takes care of DNS. and a big thanks to
Marc-Olivier Barre who manages the email services.
All systems go.

Dear mailing list users,
The list migration to the brand new virtual is complete and all the
problems seems to be fixed. As Robin told me when we were in the middle of
this panicky evening: "when we find what the problem is, we will all laugh
about it". Well, let me share the laughing with you:
It was just a typo !
Funny how trouble in the computer world eventually always turn out to be
an invisible typo in a configuration file :)
Enjoy your new server and post away !
Cheers,

Hi there,
I'm sorry to inform you that our email services are currently disrupted.
Due to increasing hardware problems with the linuxaudio.org server in
previous weeks we're already prepared a new machine. Another major outage
of linuxaudio.org this morning (UTC) forced us to switch to the new host
a bit early...
All services but for mailman (email-lists) are online and functional.
We're working on resolving the problem and will inform you about our
progress.

Hi everyone,
got nothing to do during the Easter holidays ? I don't think so...
The second edition of ____The LAC Times____ is online:
http://lac.linuxaudio.org/2010/LAC_Times_2010_04_02.pdf
Subjects in this edition:
* A first glimpse of the LAC 2010 programme
* The 150-Years-of-Music-Technology Composition Competition
* A short history of recording sound [part 2]
No longer do you need to worry what to do at Easter. Now you'll worry what to do first:
study the programme to decide which day(s) you're gonna visit the Linux Audio Conference,
work on your composition or read Than's second history lesson.
Enjoy !
Marc
I'll put a printer-friendly version under the News tab of the LAC site soon.

Hi Nils,
> Normally Composition Contests are anonymous to keep them free of personal thoughts and impressions. It is sad but a Jury cannot be objective, even a small picture or the name or e-mail address can be too much.
Good point, I'll ask Than to make the material anonymous when he forwards it
to the other jury members. I'm pretty sure that was his intention anyway.
Looking forward to hear your composition (although I won't know it's yours... ;-) )
Marc
Hi Nils,
> Nice idea but the deadline for not giving it personally was already crossed on 26th of march.
That should have said 26th of April ! Sorry I overlooked this and thanks for mentioning.
> Also it would be nice to know if the composition is anonymous or not.
Anonymous ? Why would you want it to ?
Cheers,
Marc
Hi all,
exactly 150 years ago the first sound recording was made, written in ink.
In exactly one month the Linux Audio Conference 2010 will take place.
These two events gave rise to
"The 150-Years-of-Music-Technology Composition Competition"
There are nice prizes to be won and of course the honour and fame associated
with the winning composition. The winning composition will also be played
at the Linux Sound Night on May 3rd.
All the info you need for participating in the competition is here:
http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/lac2010/composition-competition
Have fun !
Than van Nispen tot Pannerden and Marc Groenewegen
