SCOPE OF THE SEMINAR
The exponential growth of network speed makes it possible to
exchange high quality audio and video contents over the Internet,
often with real time capabilities. However, multimedia streaming
still presents several issues with regards to Free Software and open
standards: patents on software and data formats, free codecs
availability, standards definitions, etc, etc. The goal of this
seminar is to provide an overview of existing Free Software for
multimedia streaming over Internet, to envisage future developments
and collaborations in this area and to examine the possible ways to
fund these developments.

Actually the choice of wording for the announcement was quite
unfortunate (this was due partly to time pressure and partly to the
fact that I'm not a native english speaker). I was thinking about it
right after sending the announcement out, but I was hoping nobody
would notice the ambiguity. :)
The intended meaning was that this would be the first *instance* of
FSMSI (Free Software for Multimedia Streaming over Internet). It was
not meant to say that FSMSI was the first (or the only) seminar
dealing specifically with streaming *and* Free Software. I don't know
any other european-wide seminars specifically devoted to this
combination of topics (I know about many conferences on streaming but
not specifically on Free Software, and viceversa) but this is only due
to my ignorance.

In this case you are quite right - our fault. I'm going to issue a
corrective statement right now; personally I am not interested in
asserting "I was there first" (I never was, in this like in other
fields of endeavour); I'd rather prefer to see good people gathering
and discussing topics I care very much for.
On a related note, I hope to see you at the seminar, if you happen to
be in Paris on June 23/24. If you want to present the LiViDo project
during this seminar, I'd be glad to give you my allotted time (since
it would just be the introduction to the overall seminar, and I think
I can reduce that to 2 minutes without people suffering too much). Of
course, LiViDo is not directly related to streaming, but since my
overall idea is to have a complete toolchain for audio/video
production, editing, transmission and playback, it would be
interesting to hear your ideas on the topic.
Oh, and thank you for the mail - I bet a pizza with a friend of mine
that you would be the first to criticize the announcement. :)

Just to be transparent (a good habit which I try to adhere to as much
as I can) I realized that since MIU-FT not the only promoter of the
event, it's correct to ask IRCAM (Francois Dechelle specifically) if
he agrees with issuing a corrective statement.
I'm going to ask him on the list right now - if every agrees we'll
issue the correction as soon as possible.

about the list of seminars i'm sadly running out of time today for an
extensive research....
i've been doing a lot of seminars about that myself, proposing MuSE and
icecast as an alternative to real audio technology...
first one was back in 2000 at the hackmeeting.org
http://www.ecn.org/hackit00/ when we did a seminar with Radio Ondarossa,
which is now still streaming using dynebolic in their studio
another one was http://www.autistici.org/loa/web/main.html
that's when i got to know c1cc10 and bomboclat who did bolic1 and
inspired me for dyne:bolic :)
more you see on the left column of muse.dyne.org website, or
dyne.org/timezones
BTW i remember at that time RealNetworks offered me to "buy" dyne.org,
it was Rob Lanphier being part of the SMIL/W3C consortium - how funny!
i wonder if something like that happened as well to xiph.org ppl.
another interesting initiative is http://openserver.cccb.org
that is more institutional stuff,
i heard about it back in 2002 or even 2001
in the fertile italian underground there have been quite a lot of
seminars in schools as well social centers, many of them during 2001
i remember one in Campobasso even spawned a nice and young community
radio which is now institutionally tight to the high school where the
seminar was held, http://roi.culturalibera.org
and so on and so forth ...
the best thing of all this is that it's very hard to keep track :)

I want to change the title to:
"FSMSI 2004: european seminar on Free Software for Multimedia
Streaming over Internet"
avoiding 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc altogether.
Francois (Dechelle) and I wrote this stuff and I'm quite sure we both
meant what Steve understood, but since there *is* some ambiguity and I
want to avoid it as much as I can [0] I'll do the proposed changes if
Francois agrees and if the native english-speaking people around will
confirm me that there is less ambiguity this way. :)
