Hi Thorsten,
Great job! IMHO, I think that we should exert more control over how the logo
will be integrated, and in this case my suggestion is to provide some
spacing around the logo as well as to stylize the edges so that we don't
have a bland square. In other words, I think we should integrate the white
logo border into the logo itself (i.e. something more like the frame
suggested in my e-mail). This will ensure more professional look in those
situations where a white background becomes necessary (and this will likely
be in a majority of places). Please see attached mock-up for a possible
solution (perhaps we should do the same for the large logo?).
Apart from the previous point, I am also thinking that we should make sure
that penguin's belly is always white as this is also a part of the
identifying trademark. As a matter of fact, I am not sure whether we should
allow the logo in any other background color than white...

We should, however, provide 2 versions: one that
can be used on any
background (i.e. transparent png) and another which would have a white
background so that it can provide maximum contrast. I would still make
the
second one as a semi-transparent png so that its
edges are curved (i.e.
please see attached gimp file).
Attached an archive with SVG and PNG exports. SVGs with filled and
transparent penguins, matching PNGs and flattened ones with white
background. "w" is for width. 677 is the width currently in use on the
website. If other sizes are needed, export to the desired one from
Inkscape
(you should transfer the exported file to grayscale mode afterwards, can
be
done with the GIMP). Or ask me. Don't scale the PNGs!

As long as there's dark on bright contrast, there's no need for a frame
and I think it would look clumsy. I have to do something for the bright
on dark case, though, so good point :)

For bright background colours, the penguin works fine unfilled.
Imagine it being printed on a bright blue t-shirt. Given the SVG sources,
it would be easy enough for anyone to remove the white fill, so releasing
only the versions with it could make sure it's used by default, without
making black only versions impossible and putting people off by a set of
strict rules that smell of lawyers.

Good point! However, I still believe that, since we are talking here about a
branding effort, this is not so much about being in control, but rather
about ensuring the most efficient outreach which in this case boils down to
consistency. This is especially important for a niche environment such as
ours.

background :-) .Perhaps we should provide them with the black part being
transparent so that it is more easily blended with whatever background--as a
matter of fact we could simply keep these since if they are placed against a
white background, we in effect get the current logo anyhow...

I think it would be best to go with only the rectangular versions of this set
for the bright on dark case. You can't see it on black, but the shapes have
black outlines, as that is much nicer with coloured backgrounds.
For a website with a bright orange, green or whatever background, I myself
would most likely not want to have a box around the logo.
Finaly, a recangle with rounded corners is a very weak shape regarding
recognition. The penguin and text makes for a strong shape, where any
addition can only take away from.
For tomorrow I hope to get around to testing the logo with a printer.
Afterwards I will quite likely adjust the line width for the penguin.
That should be the last tweaks for real, then :)
BTW, an interesting quote from #lad as reaction to the logo as seen
on my last blog post:

work matters. To some it may seem incidental, but as I add logos to the

Yet, the Internet teems with such atrocious examples. Your point is valid
nonetheless, as ultimately those same designers may make a bad choice no
matter what kind of a logo selection we furnish... Still, there is a part of
me which wants to make [at least online] logo as much idiot-proof as
possible. Hence my genuine interest in the latest version.

We both have agreed, however, that the inverted logo by itself (the last one
in the set with the black background) is inadequate. Hence, this in and of
itself will not suffice.

I'd say, you are wasting your precious brain cycles on a total flame. The
logo has been out there to be commented upon for quite some time, and for
such a comment to arrive this late in the process is neither constructive
nor useful. Personally, I am convinced that the current logo not only meets
all the programmatic/aesthetic needs, but also satisfies all of the
pragmatic considerations.

even though Ico quoted it, it's not moderated yet. I hope you
can wait a bit until it's clear which versions are acceptable
and which not. I could send you a SVG so you can export to any
size you want yourself or a PNG of a requested size, though.
BTW, it could be the lines, especialy of the soundwaves are a
bit thin for small print. I might test that and maybe create a
version with a solid cone if needed.

As mentioned in my earlier e-mail, I really love the latest versions, and if
no one objects, my suggestion is to simply adopt these as our new official
logo variations, including the large ones as well, provided that the dark
regions are left transparent so that they can take on whatever color the
website is using for background--this way they would look exactly the same
as our current logo on white background, while on other colors would offer a
nice frame.
