Please allow me to chime in here. Linuxaudio.org is not designed to be

cross-platform efforts which cater to the Linux platform are also very much
endorsed by the Linuxaudio.org (we already have a number of such memberships).
It is simply that the consortium's efforts are based on our focus, which is
currently the dominant libre platform.
As far as the logo is concerned, I agree that the "cutesy" factor may be seen
as distracting/inappropriate. FWIW, this at times can be also its strength as
it allows the logo to stand out. The actual "cute" factor is also
significantly diminished when the logo is reformatted to a web-usable size
(namely made significantly smaller).
It is also conceivable that certain sites/webmasters will be more prone to
including logos with penguins than others. For this reason, perhaps we could
also talk about having 1 official logo, but 2 or more web logos which would be
a variation on the original.
Most importantly, no matter which logo we pick, we should provide svg/png's
online for those who wish to provide link on their webpages.

Arguably so, and please rest assured that I have had the 'the talk' from
RMS more than once, but in the case of linuxaudio.org the organisation
is specifically about the Linux kernel and related free software. We
don't cover audio on BSD, Darwin or any other free software platform. We
do recognise the The Linux Mark Institute and the work it has done to
defend the Linux trademark.

New subject: Linuxaudio.org updates
Hi,
It makes sense to me to have one for letterheads and official documents
and a couple funkier ones for web use.
However, the new suggested version is not suitable for official use IMO.
Shouldn't we have something that can be easily scaled without loosing
clarity. For example the lad logo scales very well even though it is a
bit abstract for some people.
I am working on something now that I'll submit later today.

No offense meant, but it seems rather busy to be immediately
recognizable. And I haven't checked, but I suspect it won't scale well.
Think about the successful logos out there, and how simplistic they are.
Nike, McDonalds, etc. are pretty good examples to look at, as they don't
get much more simple and recognizable than those.

recognizable. And I haven't checked, but I suspect it won't scale well.
Think about the successful logos out there, and how simplistic they are.
Nike, McDonalds, etc. are pretty good examples to look at, as they don't

You know if we don't have a G in there somewhere, the Gnome crowd will
get upset :-)
But seriously, I agree that logos need to be as simple as possible. Both
Apple and the BBC recently refactored their logos to make them simpler
(and not coincidentally, cheaper to print).

Hand and cursor become unrecognizable at 100x70.
This thing tries to tell a much too complicated story
anyway. and how to transfer it to a b/w version?
If colour is used, it's a single one, in most cases.

Sorry for the multiple posts with the images. Mailman stopped my first
post with the attachments so I posted the link.
Ok, The feedback so far is that the image I sent is too busy/has too
much info and the dancing penguin is not suitable. Does anyone have a
specific suggestion for a logo?
I was working on the idea that this logo would be more like a crest than
an instantly recognisable and identifiable brand image which a
multinational company would pay a professional design team millions of
dollars to create...
I have made some tweaks and uploaded a few grayscale versions for
comparison.

BTW, from a brief search of the website it appears that linuxaudio.org
doesn't currently have a logo. There is the image of the name but that
doesn't constitute a logo in my book. Did I miss it?

I think your logo has promise, it probably just needs some
simplification. If you like, send me your source file (Inkscape SVG?)
and I'll show you what I mean.

Don't worry about it, those expensive branding teams don't always get it
right. A few years ago there was an organisation in the UK renamed
'Consignia' - it was, er, the Post Office...

BTW, from a brief search of the website it appears
that linuxaudio.org
doesn't currently have a logo. There is the image of the name but that
doesn't constitute a logo in my book.
Quite right, the existing 'domain name' image doesn't work if you can't
read English, while a true logo is universal. It does let you know what
to type into your browser though :-)
