you can have it all through ethernet or wireless, the latter being the original intent

take note that it only works over the local network segment, that is: it can go through network switches but never, ever across routers.

I used Rui's code to implement ipMIDI support directly inside Ardour in order to work more smoothly with the SSL Nucleus control surface. Performance is outstanding - as a user you would have no idea that there is a network connection involved.
