Can't open ALSA device
which is weird, because i can open the device just fine, and so can jackā€¦

Are you coding ALSA yourself, or using a helper library? I can recommend Fons' zita-alsa-pcmi, latest version from:

Its a lightweight GPLv3 wrapper class around the ALSA API to make it easier to use for real-time audio applications, and I have found it a pleasure to work with.

I don't know the answer, because I used the zita-alsa-pcmi and just wrote audio into the buffers :)
