Hello,
I want to setup a sound system with linux. For this, I need an app that
could split an audio file in four tracks in order to add them separately
some effects.
I tried to achieve this using Jamin which have this kind of "Crossover"
functionnality, but it is defenetly not usable for what I need.
The ideal application should not be too complex :
it should be compatible with Jack and could just get a stereo channel
for input and provides 4 stereo channels. The 4 stereo channels would be
the result off a crossover spliting by frequency ranges of the input
stereo channel.
we could give a default preset like this :
1st stereo channel : low
2nd stereo channel : low-mid
3rd stereo channel : high-mid
4th stereo channel : high
of course thoose ranges should also be set manually.
each channel could have the gain controlled and could have assigned 4
effects with LADSPA plug-ins.
each slider or knob should be midi controlled (I know that Jack Rack
already does this).
Does this kind of apps should take a long time to be developped ?
I'm not skilled to undergo this kind of project alone as I'm a poor PHP/Perl
and little Python developper.
Anyone interested for this kind of project ?

Right now ams would be your best bet, and there's tons of bandpass
filters for ladspa (try the blop plugins). If you really don't want to
use ams for whatever reason, I guess you could run 4 seperate instances
of jack rack...

ok thats a good news :)
Right now ams would be your best bet,
what is ams ? just try to search about that with no luck...
and there's tons of bandpass
filters for ladspa (try the blop plugins). If you really don't want to
use ams for whatever reason, I guess you could run 4 seperate instances
of jack rack...
Ok, to begin I tried to use 3 instances of Jack rack but the resulting sound is very bad ;
there is a lot of saturation even if no effects are loaded !
Sometimes effect plug-ins are jumping so I must restart all the apps and reconnect all the
stuff in order to get the chain working again, I can't imagine doing this during a
live session :)
This configuration doesn't seem to be really stable :-(
I turned myself to Linux in order to find a stable config :)
So as suggested by other people, I tried ecasound :
when I run it in interactive mode and I set the input it complains with
a seg fault :-(
Anybody could help me with ecasound ?
I'm on demudi 1.2.0 with Kernel 2.4.25-1-multimedia-686
motherboard P4PE PIV 2.66GHz 512ko cache with 512Mo of DDRAM
the sound device is an integrated analog device soundmax (snd-intel8x0)
I have an edirol UM2 midi interface (2 in + 2 out)
all devices seems to be well controlled by the system.

AMS is probably your best bet. If you want the ultimate in control
(but a much much steeper learning curve), Supercollider is the thing
to go for. Probably Pd will do as well, but I don't know it.

And to prove it, I did a four-band-crossover filter network in Pd in
the last couple of minutes. As I did have problems getting the GLAME
filter to work in Pd, I just used the standard Pd lop~ and hip~
filters, which sound crappy, but are builtin, so no externals for Pd
are needed. xover-main-simple.pd is the main patch.

Now I need to add effects on each track... thats another story :)
ams is for sure easyer, put I did not find enough strong cutoff plugins
in the LADSPA library to achieve what I need (I tried them all). perhaps
I should chain them with a limiter/gate.

Well, you can add a -ei operator to do the gain per chain, and in ecasound you
could add the ladspa effects you want to use directly, or you use
something like jack-rack and mix the stuff back together somehow else.

that would mean
you have to control center/width for the bandpass filters separately.

OK, yet another solution, now with my absolute favourite "modular". Since
Pd is mentioned on lists so often, I figured I should do some counter-PR
for SuperCollider :-)
The program below for SuperCoolider will do the splitting for you,
channels SuperCollider:out_1 through out_8 will have the 4 stereo
channels, and since we are in a modern age, you can control the split
points and gain via OSC :-) (MIDI would be possible to do from within SC3
too, its very simple)

Took me about 20 minutes :-)
Whats left is you need to connect the ports to something like jack-rack,
this could also be automated from SC be telling the server which jack
ports to connect to. Alternatively, if the effects you need can be implemented
with SC3 Unit Generators, you might even be able to do it all inside
SC3.

Not quite. You need to run sclang and not scsynth. Now sclang does
interpretation step-by-step, and if there is no input left, the program
ends, so if you just do
# sclang split.sc
It will start the server and all, but it will immediately exit again, which
is not what you want. The trick is to specify another input source, like
stdin, so that the interpreter waits for more commands, and therefore
doesn't exit. You can use this to control sclang by giving it
additional commands if you want.
So you do:
# sclang split.sc -
And it should work.

Yeah, I suppose it's a bug in the plugin~ external. I heard that this
can happen before, but it's the first time, I encountered it
personally. Most other plugins work, though. And there are very good
filters in the IEM-library for Pd. Those filters rock.
and what about JMax ?
Not much anymore, according to list traffic. There is only about one
mail every two to four weeks coming written on jmax-list. And you
would need to go through the Java-hassle. Don't bother.

of course you can use SC w/o emacs as you know (just use scsynth directly or
pipe to/fro it. But there might be another option in the (maybe not so)
distant future.. Afaik the win32 SC gui (which is not quote finished) is
implemented in wxwidgets, so i suppose it might be worth pursuing porting it
to linux. Of course only for people who don't know emacs. btw: i'm not too
much of an emacs guy myself (mildly put) but i must admit that in a way the
emacs/sc combination works very well.

implemented in wxwidgets, so i suppose it might be worth pursuing porting it
to linux. Of course only for people who don't know emacs. btw: i'm not too
much of an emacs guy myself (mildly put) but i must admit that in a way the
emacs/sc combination works very well.

quick to build in Pd. In SC3 I'm mostly interested in dynamically

can bypass Emacs. I tried Emacs two or three times in the recent past
just for SC, but then I found, that in Emacs the Backspace or Delete
key (the C-h one) still didn't work as expected and I said to myself:
"No, after all these years I'm *not* letting Emacs force me to
customize the Backspace key in some .emacs file on my own. This is
just not my job, it's the job of Mr. and Mrs. Emacs. I refuse to do
this."
I admit, I wasn't patient at all. ;) Maybe the next time I will hold
on.

code you could double click and edit would be an incredibly good idea...

No, its actually the job of your distributor to configure programs
such that they work together nicely. On Debian, I've never had
any backspace issues with Emacs.

Yeah, that is obvious, since you rant the third time in some weeks about
this issue :-).
I've demonstrated how to run sc code from the command-line. If you prefer
Vim and stuff, I really dont understand what is now preventing you
from using SC without Emacs. Its going to be awkward, but hey, thats
what you get for skipping Emacs! :-) Vi users have to feel the
pain, self-inflicted and all...
Simply edit your .sc file, and if you think it should work, do:
# sclang scfile.sc -
Now you can use stdin to test some additional commands (real-time programming).
If an error occured, go back to your mighty vim and edit the .sc file.
Since I dont use vi very much, I dont really know if
it can run and communicate with external processes. For a more Vim friendly
interface to SC you'll have to find a Vim expert (if they exist).

This actually is on Debian. After a fresh install or all emacs
related, empty .emacs, Backspace is not deleting backwards.
I will dig a bit deeper and file a bug report.

it's hardly as full featured but it can do the trick. As others
previously mentioned you can pipe code to sclang via stdin or
via sclangx < /tmp/scpipe or whatever, but what you get with
emacs (and I tell you, you want it) is searchable help and
browsing of the classlib sources. I don't think that at the
moment it's worth writing another texteditor, if you insist you
can always write your sc code in vim and load it in emacs or
try things like emacs vi mode http://billharlan.com/pub/emacs/
or http://www.dina.dk/~abraham/religion/poor-mans-vi-mode.html

at some point i was interested walking the other direction of
the food chain: dynamically create PD guis via OSC from SC.
d.lj provided me with some impressing PD patches but alas,
it's a hack.

initially i wanted to implement an SC interface in vim; the
reason emacs was chosen is the fact that the old lisp monster
is about the only editor on earth that handles subprocess
communication (relatively) cleanly. btw try backspace in vi
(not vim).
