I was the one that did that. And it does work. I call my project El-Cheapo to reflect the ideology: to create a reliable multichannel recording system at a as low a budget as possible. Have a look at the linux audio and alsa archives for "El-Cheapo" and you should find the threads.
My current system can record 6 simultaneous input channels without xruns using using three AudioPCI cards that cost me 20 US each. The PC is based upon a 2G Celeron CPU that you can get for 100 US nowadays and 1 Gb of memory. OS is Fedora Core 1 and Planet CCRMA.
I removed the crystals from two of the cards and chained the clocks after the first card's clock. I get good recordings with a latency of about 65 ms, or -n3 -p 1024 with 48 kHz sample rate. At 44.1 kHz I can occasionally get a stable 8 ms latency with -n3 -p128, but the next time I start it, it may give xruns. -p2048 works rock solid 100% with no problems.
XFCE desktop gives better results than Gnome.
Please read the El-Cheapo threads and drop me a line if you need advice on the hardware mod. Software is not my field, so there I rely on the help from these lists, too.

Hi all,
I'm not really new to either linux (4 -5 years) or linux audio (2-3
years) BUT I am new to getting more than one sound card to function at
the same time. I'm trying to get a linux based sound system (recording
only) up and running for our church. They currently have an 8 channel
mixer/amp and I would like to record8 analog channels in real-time. It
seems everything I have tried doen't work.
Here's the situation: I have alsa v 1.07 drivers, etc installed on a
2.4.25 kernel with the low-latency patch I have downloaded Jack v 0.99
and installed it. In conjunction with Ardour I can get either, BUT NOT
BOTH sound cards to record/play.
Any ideas? I have even explored the 8 channel sound cards but I just
know the church can't afford $500.
Thanks
Harold Norris
hello
if i use OSS module of SSM and set it up to output only i get nice
output
if i set it up for duplex i hear some clicks
if i use JACK module i hear some weird extra harmonics + noises, no
matter what JACK settings.
where should I look for the reason?
NB: if i use ardour + jack i have no problem with or without
duplex.

Hi,
This song is mastered with JAMin but I can't recall if
it's mixed with Ardour. This is an Ezra Pound poem
that I wanted to do something with since reading it in
the early 1980's. It took about 20 years to get the
right chemistry.
What I learned tonight. You know how Diet Coke foams
up in a glass. You get an inch of coke and eight
inches of foam. If you touch the side of yer nose with
your finger and then stick the digit into the foam, it
pops the bubbles.

Hi,
Be careful what you wish for! In response to Dave's
suggestion that we focus on music, I'm posting one of
my songs. My server is complete crap. If you
experience download problems, you'll have to be
patient. Of course anyone is free to load the song
onto another server.
Marek, I am tempted to rerecord the vocal track just
for you. But I won't, so, you'll need to replace every
instance of MP3 with RME. Of course I love RME and
you'll hear why I wouldn't do that. Not even for you.
:)

Background Info
This song, mp3dotcom, is from a set of around 20. My
order for the band was to write and record the music
for two albums in one session and that each song must
be a different style of music. We did not record any
previously written ideas.
I hired my studio partner Bill Bailey to produce and
engineer the album. We designed an itenerary that
started the recording session with drums. We worked
with the drummer for about an hour to warm him up,
judge his capabilities and get tones. About every hour
there after we added the next logical instrument;
bass, guitar, keyboard, second guitar, percussion,
second bass, etc until we reached the finale where
everyone achieved euphoric stupidity. There were about
a dozen players involved. Everyone had a specific time
that they were expected to arrive and we asked them to
not show up early. Think of it as mahem by design.
Everyone involved agreed that it was the most fun they
ever had in a studio.
After 18 hours we had enough music for two albums and
we began writing lyrics and producing vocals. It took
about four sessions to complete the vocal tracks and a
couple more to mix 11 or 12 of the songs.
Production Details
The music was orginally recorded to 16bit blackface
ADAT. A couple years ago I transfered the multitracks
to Ardour for remixing. I mastered this song today
using Ardour and JAMin.
There were transient spikes on the snare hits that
caused distortion and a short loss of audio
immediately following many of the snare hits. I put
the TAP limiter post fader to hold the spikes down by
-5db or there abouts which corrected that problem.
Total mix and master time for this song is definitely
less than 60 minutes.
I've never released this album although half the songs
ended up in an indie film that starred one of the
Saturday Nite Live writers. The movie was titled Jack
Halloween. I appreciate bad movies as much as anyone
but this movie sucked so bad I couldn't even watch it.
After agreeing to let the producers, City Lights Media
of NYC, "use my crappy songs in your no budget movie"
i informed them that they had thrown their money in
the toilet and that the movie wasnt' worthy of releas.
They agreed about the quality of the movie and I don't
think it ever saw the light of day.
I guess this album is about four years old and it's
time to start releasing it one song at a time. One of
the bass players was murdered in a domestic assault,
and the flute player died of a herione overdose. The
rest of us are just getting older, fatter and losing
our teeth. Damned it all!
After much TODO:

Hello,
as the maintainer of AGNULA Libre Music (http://muzik.agnula.org) I've
been ehm... lurking the thread about collecting music made with linux.
AGNULA Libre Music is basically a web site where te registered user can
upload his own music, choose a license, write metatag and have it
displayed into the directory. Very straightforward.
So, as you probably know, the ALM archive was born with some kind of
licenses in mind rather than tools, but I admit I like the idea to
promote music composed/performed/recorded with free software.
We have some ideas, such as displaying a logo for linux-made tracks -
maybe this can be done better :)
Of course, we don't want to compete with similar services or tools,
just let us know your comments, ideas and feelings.
Thank you,
Davide

Two questions...
First, I've got two sound cards in my system:
ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller
0 [I82801DBICH4 ]: ICH - Intel 82801DB-ICH4
Intel 82801DB-ICH4 at 0xffaff800, irq 17
Module: snd-intel8x0
Sound Blaster AudioPCI64V/AudioPCI128
1 [AudioPCI ]: ENS1371 - Ensoniq AudioPCI
Ensoniq AudioPCI ENS1371 at 0xdc00, irq 18
Module: snd-ens1371
The first "sound card", number 0, is on the motherboard. I can't
get it to load as card number 1. /etc/modules.conf makes no
difference in this regard. "snd-card-0" and "sound-slot-0" seem
to be ignored. I've tried lots of variants in modules.conf to get
this to work, and tried various orders. Here's a simple case:
alias snd-card-1 snd-intel8x0
alias snd-card-0 snd-ens1371
Is there a way to get this to work?
My second question might be related to the first. If I disable
the on-board sound card, then all but one sound related thing
works for me. Audio in/out works, MIDI in/out works, speakers
work. Playing a CD does not produce sound no matter what the
application (cdp, Kscd, xmcd). If I enable the on-board sound,
then I can play CDs fine, but the output comes out of the
on-board sound card. I'd like to reroute the CD sound to come
out of the SoundBlaster PCI sound card. How can I do this?
Thanks....
FWIW, my loaded sound related modules are these:

Hi all,
following the conclusion of a very long discussion on both LAD and LAU
mailinglists, i would like to invite you all to participate in an event
that should take place on RME's official forum.
The goal is to run a thread on linux audio and RME support. Not a
discussion, but rather just raising your hand if you are a customer and
letting them know what hardware you are using, or whether you are
interested in their products or plan to purchase one if you are not a
customer of RME todate.
Please, if you are a RME customer, let them at least know what hardware
you are using.
You are free to express your feelings and you are free to express no
feelings if you do not wish.
Please avoid using swearwords.
In case you haven't found the thread, feel free to start it.
"Hi, i'm a linux audio user and i'm using your prod. X with linux audio
and i plan to continue using your products in the future (upgrades, new
products) if there will be future support from RME by providing
specifications" or something along these lines.
We need to agree on the topic so that people can easily find it:
"Linux audio, ALSA and RME support"
In case you are not satisfied with the topic, let us know so that we can
agree upon another one. Please be sure to post in that thread.
In case you have friends that use linux audio with RME and are not LAD
or LAU subscribers, please let them know.
The forum can be found here:
News server: news.x-networks.de
Forum: rme-audio.forum
In case you have troubles finding the right software in order to reach
the forum, here are some suggestions:
