Hi gang...
Just bought a new box for DAW stuff..
Got MDK 10.0 all installed and updated...Got all the cool apps installed
and working ok.
The ASUS mobo is an A7V8X-MX SE with Athalon +2500. It runs an Award
Pheonix Bios which is not as extensive on options as some of my other
boxes...
This mobo has only 3 PCI slots and 1 AGP. It's a mini form factor case
and board. I have shuffled the card from slot to slot, stopped the
kernel loading the USB modules (*I don't need 'em anyway), messed with
all relevant BIOS settings (Assign IRQ's, APIC, etc) and I cannot get
this card (Delta 1010LT)onto an Interrupt lower than 10.
cat /proc/interrupts
0: 486023 XT-PIC timer
1: 1990 XT-PIC i8042
2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
8: 1 XT-PIC rtc
10: 0 XT-PIC ICE1712
11: 14687 XT-PIC eth0
12: 7242 XT-PIC i8042
14: 11595 XT-PIC ide0
NMI: 0
LOC: 486014
ERR: 546
MIS: 0
Any thoughts...I also tried the APIC options in LILO...
Is it really necessary to even have it on a lower Interrupt...I mean are
the benefits substantial or miniscul and not worthy of 20 hrs of boot /
halt / boot, etc...
Thanks in advance
R~
Chaps,
I'd like to set up a music-only PC to produce demos of my songs, by
installing some simple system from the ground (OS) up. The PC I've made
available for this is a 1 GHz AMD Athlon if that makes sense and I remember
well. My preferred method is often to create a complete sequence of a song
then gradually substitute MIDI instruments by audio tracks of recorded
musicians.
What would you go for if you wanted the functionalities listed below? (I
would sacrifice some of the features for the sake of simplicity.)
-Sequencer
-Multitracker / sampler, the "loop" kind (reads waves from disk in real
time, inserted at any points or measures of the song).
-Soundfont enabled realtime synth
-Basic effects for the multitracker: simple reverb + simple equalizer
-Audio editor hopefully with advanced features such as quantizer (handy for
drums) and note tuning (essential for 3 piece brass section!) + some basic
such as compressor
-Any low level stuff for the above from drivers to audio mixer
What would you try if you were me? (Unseccessfully tried to install Planet
CCRMA before, would give a second try if advisable as a simple solution.) I
really really need to spend little time in getting it to work but I'd
definitely like to go open + Linux.
I'm sorry if this has been discussed previously, I just joined this list and
had a quick search for related threads, anyway if this topic has been around
I would appreciate a pointer to the relevant thread and please accept my
apologies.
Many thanks for any advice, any comments will be much appreciated.
Yours,
Alex
PS: Yesterday I visited a Protools based studio (G4 Mac + 24 channel console
+ big rack with lotsa stuff), needless to say I was in heaven but that was a
very different story altogether!

While googling info. about how to accomplish musical
expression in MIDI, I digressed to the following link:
www.midisound.com/techncl.htm
Particularly the last section:
"What if I don't own a sound card with "Wavetable"
synthesis?"
What would be the comparable alternative(s) under
Linux?
virmidi?

Hello,
I have purchased a CD that seems to be copy protected. When I play it,
using XMMS and digital playback, it's rather noisy/clicky.
I'd still like to play it, either directly, or by reading to disk first.
As I understand, I need some software that would implement Reed-Solomon
correction, as done in usual CD players. Is any such software available?
Preferrably for Linux, of course.
Yours, Mikhail Ramendik
Greetings:
I've recently updated my tutorial on using VST/VSTi plugins under Linux :
http://www.djcj.org/LAU/quicktoots/toots/vst-plugins/
It now includes material regarding the fst project as well as the
vstserver.
Best regards,

I had posted a thread on the linuxsampler-devel list entitled "Multisample
Format", on September of 2003:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=3119861&forum_id=127…
But no one answered...
My fault, I couldn't find the linuxsampler-user list ;-)
So let's get back to one of my questions from there: do you think of a format
with all files (samples and definition file) packed all-in-one or leave the
patch file all by itself?
I'd have a go for the second option:
- it would help me build the multisampled instruments faster by scripting the
process
- by using another script that would slice the MIS samples and name them
correctly, we would just have to provide patch files and scripts, which are easy
on space!
So I'll stick with writing that script that will only slice the MIS files untill
you come up with that new XML-based format!
What is the sample extension supposed to be chosen then: proprietary *.wav or
*.aiff, raw files...?
Which one is the best uncompressed audio file format?

I'll try to rob some space and bandwidth at my Uni to have a french-based server
mirrored!

Good luck!

I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge about generating giga or akai
compatible files?
With my recent interest in copyright-free samples I have come across a
link that was posted here a few months back to a really nice set of
orchestral instrument recordings by the University of Iowa, which are
free: the info states:
"
Please feel free to use these samples in your research or music projects
without restriction. You may also cite as a reference, link to our page
from another web page, or provide a link in a publication using the
following URL:
http//:theremin.music.uiowa.edu/
Please let us know how these samples are being used in your research,
creative work, or recreation by contacting Lawrence Fritts at the
University of Iowa.
"
the page is at http://theremin.music.uiowa.edu/MIS.html
I was thinking that it would be nice to build these samples into properly
layered instruments like the Garritan set for Akai and Giga. Since I have
not the faintest clue how to build one of these sampler formats, I thought
I would post here for some info. Alternatively, I was thinking that
soundfonts could be another way to do it though there is a size limit on
these AFAIK. I know that there is the freepat project which is trying to
do similar things (but as far as I can see at the moment they are just
building a general midi patchset.. perhaps this sort of thing is planned
by them for the future..?)
Anyway, I think it would be a great thing to be able to have some truly
free giga instruments for use with the linux sampler project.. In the
first instance I think we need to clear the use of these samples in this
way with the University of Iowa, but by the sounds of their webpage I
don't think they would have a problem with this.

Hi,
For now Audigy 2 ZS is suported in alsa and works as Audigy 1.
In CVS is support for side speakers.
Maximum sample rate is 16 bit / 48000 kHz for now. There is some
progress and in near future 24 bit / 96 Khz playback will be supported
too. Look at
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=5029036&forum_id=1752
If you need 24bit /96 KHz recording, then soundcards based on envy24
(ice) are better choose for now.

What is the problem with Audigy 1. Why can't you record ???
