So, what is the general recommendation for people who want to work with audio on a laptop that isn't necessarily dedicated to audio?

I never installed Mint, neither have I ever used a Mint live media.

Well, I did use a Mint LTS for a number of years, and actually agree with much of what you said - I wouldn't use it again. A number of issues that were fixed in upstream Ubuntu never made it downstream, and it became quite frustrating. The much larger Ubuntu user base is reflected in a better user experience in my opinion.
