Ugh, please ignore. This was a weird issue caused by a vncviewer hang forcing me to restart lightdm / xorg, and tmux hanging around. loginctl kill-session, restart tmux, and I'm in business.

I couldn't find a kxstudio bug tracker (happy to be pointed in the right direction), but even after running dbus-launch, the /tmp/dbus-$whatever file doesn't exist. Any clues?
