Hello Jeanette,

Thanks for your reply.

The purpose of the recording is to capture my voice to deliver training materials through MP3 files via Internet downloads.

The recordings will occur in a room treated for sound absorption of echoes.

I will use a Blue Designs Yeti for the recording.

I have several years of professional training as a speaker.

I will record the signal dry and edit it in post-production.

I agree on the signal chain of equalization and limiting, with perhaps compression.

Specifically, I am looking for recommendations on the names of preferred plugins for the proposed signal chain.

Hi Stephen,
basically, I agree with Fons. The ominous answer is always "it depends". BUT... Some EQ'ing and limiting or compression should do the trick if your mic and recording situation are good enough.

My preferred EQ is fons' 4-band parametric filter, on my ArchLinux it is part of the package fil-plugins. I think Calf and others also have parametric EQs with more bands and more options.

I don't feel qualified to suggest a compressor/limiter. Again, Fons has a limiter out there, which I think is a standalone tool. I'm sure lsp-plugins might have something suitable as well.

Personally, I don't like to record something with a signal chain pre-fader, i.e. going into the recorded track. If it helps, you can always apply it for listening while recording, if you hve specific needs. Otherwise, record first, process later. I know, this is a question of "school". :)

Best wishes,

Jeanette
