Although... you could probably set-up a kind of 'template' in Ardour and use a bit of OSC for the controlling part.
Have a look at http://ardour.org/osc_control to see ho many things can actually be controlled via OSC
For example you could just append the needed songs (with individual tracks and buses set-up as needed) and use markers to create a 'playlist'... just an idea.
The idea is not that crazy, but it still might be to much fiddling on stage, but I see what you mean and will always consider it.
The thing here is also that appearance is everything. I saw a video of m last performance and I used a BOSS BR-80 for playing the backing tracks. The BR-80 is very easy to use (a wheel and hitting the play button for this purpose - the player is friendly enough to not start playing the next song), but even that simple thing for starting every song with a finger looked uncool and not so elegant.
IMO, a single footstep is the only real alternative when you are lonely or very exposed on stage. One should really look ready for playing the next tune when finishing one, and fiddling with a music player breaks that.
The way it looks now, I think I would do like this:
-Do a multitrack - One channel for the audience and one (with click if needed) or more for the musicians. Jack and the card and the mixer routes everything.
-Start mplayer with a playlist
-Hit the space bar on the keyboard on the floor for pausing when a song is finished.
-Hit it again for the next song
..or I will probably write a script start mplayer (or play, sox) song by song in order to make the playing stop automatically for each song. Then I only have to worry about starting a song from the playlist.
