the segfault happens for me too when i stop the transport (not immediately, but soon thereafter).

yeah you're right . Fixed for the next release ;)

tranches built and installed (/usr/bin) OK. Scons takes so long without and 
feedback on install which is a pain. Anyway, with no data, most things grayed
out, clicking on non-grayed button segafaults.

Did you launched it with jack transport enabled ( for example with seq 24 started and jack transport master) ? Did you try with the example.tra file ?
Strange anyway because here it doesn't segfault even with nothing set .
Could you give me more informations on how you started tranches ?
