Hi everybody,
Looking at the new mixer to connect to my genelec 8030A
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/VMX1000USB.aspx
I read
"Built-in USB interface for recording and playback of any digital
music file. Works with your PC or Mac computer—no setup or drivers
required"
So I can guess that it should be work out-of-the-box also with Linux.
Any additional info?

does a great job in software, sending mixed sound straight into a
high-quality soundcard, along with a separate channel for headphone

club system and blasting out distortion at eyeball-shaking volume...
but is certainly not appropriate level of interface compared to a
genelec (my behringer has terrible analog input sound/specs -- I use
it as a very versatile control surface, and use it for playback of
web-audio.).
What about just getting an M-Audio Delta 1010 (used even), run

and skip the physical mixer... for laptop i'd skip USB and find a
compatible firewire device. It's too bad there's no linux support for

integration of a high-quality mixer with a firewire interface.

its likely that you know this, but the feature set on a DJ mixer and
regular mixer are pretty different.

i hope i don't annoy people with yet another round of behringer bashing,
but the combination of this mixer with the rather decent genelecs
strikes me as a pretty uneven combination.
the mackie onyx mixers mentioned before work great with linux and are
pretty good, but might be over your needs and budget.
you could consider a nice audio interface that suits your needs and
combine it with a good analogue mixer, such as a small allen&heath or
soundcraft one, either of the dj or the f.o.h./studio type.

Yes, DJ mixer's have Phono inputs, and a different cue/bus setup, and
a cross-fader, sometimes with adjustable slopes, conveniently placed
and rapidly acting cut switches, and somewhat sonorous eq section,
etc.... However, some of the best DJ's I've seen -- the true old
school -- used the Urei 1620 rotary mixer and dislike crossfaders....

This is interesting news, though conflicting with "sort-of works with
FFADO" from device support section of ffado (above).
FYI, I attended a Mix Mag Web presentation (hoping to win the raffle
for the Onyx1640i) on this mixer and it looks quite interesting, from
a mixer design perspective -- e.g. input metering, PFL/AFL, and all
the other things we've argued about on LAU/LAD.

It's not like I'm going to buy one anytime soon. Especially ever since
I found out I could only get the features that had me interested in
the platform with a very large and expensive 1640i -- I'd hoped the
feature would have been in the 820i as well -- then you could easily
use it as a DJ mixer, or for live-sound with at least a x4 return (x2
for mains, x2 for headphone). These days, independent of whether
you're DJing, you still need "DJ style headphone monitoring" for
computer music performance, so I am quite disappointed that mackie
decided that "Stereo playback from DAW, returned to control room or
into channel for integration into mix" is all you need. The 820i ought
to be an 8x8, with 4 ins, 4 send/returns, 2 busses, and 4 assignable
bus-output returns.... then it would be very interesting!

Afaik none of the Onyx-i series work with FFADO.
there is a comment from ppallmers in the FFADO device support
discussion for Onyx that suggests that this *might* not be true, i

I believe in opensource because I'm curious and I don't like secrets.
Following an idea from another alsa developer that answered me before
you I'll keep analog mixer and soundcard separated.
I need also usb as external soundcard (I'm sorry Niels...).
So I'll get notepad 124fx

For the first step I'll have 2X8030A Genelec, Notepad 124fx, Linux PC,
TV Bravia, CD player, Headphones.
Maybe, to do also multichannel 5+1 from, should be better another
soundcard than Maya44usb (I have now an awful 7+1 Creative X-fi that
is not flat at all).
Then I'll add the sub, then ...
