Hi all! If this subject isn't wanted here, please forgive me and feel free to send me
where it would be most appropriate. Or if this has already been discussed, please just
let me know and I'll go through and look it up. I don't want to be a bother, but
I appreciate any info you people could pass along.
I know the Mac isn't Linux based, but I understand it is somewhat Unix based. From
what I've seen, some of the packages I could make and install (Perhaps that really
means compile?) could be done in Mac. Can anyone give me some general info about when
that might work and when it clearly won't? I only thought it might be nice to avoid
switching back and forth from different operating systems, but I can and will if it just
really isn't practical. I've just been seeing references in various packages to
installing/compiling on both systems, and thought I could get a bit more basic info. As
you can tell, my technical skills are still quite basic, but I've done enough of this
before to have some success but get into a bit of trouble too. Any info is appreciated.

I had a Mac because I thought it would work better for audio. It didn't and
it
cost me a bundle of cash to find out. Stick with linux is my advice.

Hey Kevin!
In order to help you with advice we need to know more what you want, what
your workflow is.
In general, Mac and Linux are two very different worlds and it is usually
very difficult to give what is better. Always case by case basis.

In terms of performance Mac vs linux it's not really a matter of OS but
more of hw/cpu involved... plus ~800€ for that bitten apple ;-)
Got yourself a PC, at the same cost of an iMac probably you can buy a
server with 8GbRAM, 4 core cpu and SATA raid...

Hi Kevin!
As Louigi has correctly stated, we can't best advise you without knowing
exactly what it is you want to do.
There are a few software repositories for the Mac such as MacPorts and fink
etc that specialise in porting (mainly) Linux software to the Mac to save
you the effort. This includes graphical Linux apps too because Apple have
an X server for OSX but such apps aren't as well integrated with OSX as
native OSX apps so you're recommended to run the native ports where
possible, if they exist.
I'm no Apple dev and have only briefly played with Xcode but my general
impression is that non-graphical, terminal only based Linux software should
be easier to get compiled and running under OSX than anything that needs
X11 etc. It depends on their dependencies.

Hi all, and thank you for your responses. For those suggesting hardware, I already own
the Mac, so that's not an issue at present.
I'm interested in mostly command line activity as I use a screen reader. I'm
specifically interested in LinuxSampler, Jack, some IR software like ZitaConvolver, and
SetBFree. Other than Zita, I've used all those before in Ubuntu with no problem, so
I'm fairly used to them. I already have JackOS working, although I don't yet know
how well its going to work. I already have LinuxSampler working. I've seen scripts
for SetBFree which seem quite clear, requiring ZitaConvolver and Jack. In this case I get
a complaint that Jack isn't available, which makes me think that JackOS isn't
sufficient. Perhaps I need to compile one myself instead of using an installer? And is
that even possible?
I realize all of this would be a lot simpler if I just used Linux, but then I have the
difficulty of installing Linux on a system which is more difficult, especially because I
want to maintain my current configuration of MacOS and Windows VII through BootCamp. I do
use and need those two operating systems. I wanted the Linux on the Mac Laptop in order
for portability, but I've installed Linux on my Desktop Windows system before, so I
can go that route if this just isn't practical.
Anyway, I hope this is more clear. I think I have a suspicion
of the easier way to go, but I just wondered if some of these things could actually be
done within MacOS in order not to have to use an additional operating system. So,
although this is no longer a Linux question to some degree, if I can get advice as to
whether I should even try it or not, that would help. I used to run these things before
with a much less powerful PC-type processor with no problem, so this system should work,
unless the Mac system is just too different or incooperative to do it. Hope this helps.
