Hello everyone!
Is there a text-based application to simulate a CD, based on a toc-file?
My situation: I'm experimenting with toc-files, but I am not yet sure, if I
fully grasped allthe details and I'd like to see a few behaviours based on
some decisions without burning CD after CD. A nice script would do. I'm
mainlky interested in succession of tracks, gaps - orno gaps - perhaps
indices. CD-TEXT would be welcome luxury. Any ideas on the matter are very
much appreciated.

Hello Robin!
Certainly an idea to consider.
Still, what might I do, if I don't take the lame and easy route? This is
partly just because I'm interested and think it might be a valuable piece of
software to have around and partly just out of curiousity. :-)

With pre-gaps and the like I may or may not be able to help you, but
CD text fields in toc files I have just recently investigated to
make Ardour's toc export bullet proof with regard to non-ASCII
characters and proper escaping. I did this on my Notebook--which
doesn't even have a CD text capable burner--by modifying the cdrdao
source to output the result of it's toc sheet parser and the encoded
CD text buffer. So for CD text field handling, maybe I can help.
What are you looking for?

P.S.: I guess you could simply ask your questions about the toc
syntax here if you want, because I think the cdrdao mailing lists
are very quiet nowadays.

was exactly Ardour's support for that, which brought me onto it. We're
considering of integrating something slightly similar into another software.
But before we actually can do anything with it, I want to make sure, that I
don't tell nonsense and that we have all the restrictions quite in order.

But before we actually can do anything with it, I want to make sure, that I
don't tell nonsense and that we have all the restrictions quite in order.
You mentioned pre-gaps and (sub-)indices. I've just tested, when you
run cdrdao with the "simulate" command and the verbosity set to
level 3 ("-v 3") you will not waste a disc and still get the cue
sheet printed out as it is sent to the drive--among a lot of other
output though.
The cue sheet printout might look cryptic at first glance, but it is
not actually difficult to read. The colums are:
CTL/ADR, TNO, INDEX, DATA FORM, SCMS, MIN, SEC, FRAME
You are only interested in those rows where the first column's
second digit is "1". For those rows read TNO and INDEX in
combination with the time given by the last three columns (MIN, SEC,
FRAME). This is the layout of your tracks (there are 75 FRAMEs per
seconds), and you can study the outcome of different TOC files.

that. We will see. If I I'm still not sure, I can always go so far as to burn
a CD and find out, if I was right. :-)

Hi Julien,
since I need that for my own testing as well, here are the commands
you could use:
cdrdao simulate -v 3 test.toc 2>&1 | tee out.txt
and then to show the cue sheet a bit more readable:
grep "^[0-9]1" out.txt | awk '{print $2"."$3"
"$6":"$7":"$8}'
BTW, in the final list track number "aa" will be the end of the
audio on the CD.
