Hi,
I'm looking for something which I can use together with my 88keys
masterkeyb without knobs. It would be nice if it's small and light
enough to put on my keyboard itself. Something like the evolution uc-16,
but it would be nice if I could route my midi masterkeybd via the
controller to the computer (midi in / midi out / midi thru (?).
I like to control stuff like setBfree and some effects in Non-Mixer
probably.

For what reason will you add MIDI thru latency to the keyboard output?
Keyboard -> controller -> computer?
In this case the controller anyway wouldn't directly control the
keyboard, just the computer, but you would get MIDI thru latency.
I own a KORG nanoKONTROL old version and it can be used with an USB
extension cable. Ok, then there are two instead of one cable from your
keyboard to the computer, simply use zipties to bundle the two cables, I
don't think it will cause issues.

PPS: My apologise, I assume that a "master keyboard" won't benefit from
options such a device could provide, e.g. splitting the keyboard etc.
should be able by the master keyboard, such as sending a CC to switch a
new setup for such an additional MIDI device. I always would avoid MIDI
thru for a master keyboard and prefer several cables from and to the
computer instead.

I got a Korg nanoKONTROL to control Native Instruments's B4II -- it's
perfect as it has nine channels, each with a knob, fader and two buttons
which is just right for controlling a Hammond's drawbars.
I mapped the buttons to various things like keyclick on and off,
vibrato/chorus on/off etc and knobs to chorus/vibrato settings, keyclick
level etc.
The Nanos sit nicely atop my M-Audio Keystation 88as they are slim and
have little rubber feet so they don't slide around. They don't have
in/out/through though, just midi out over USB.
Korg, in their "wisdom", made the nanoKONTROL2 only eight channels
though. Perhaps that will be sufficient for you, or perhaps you might
find a used one on eBay.
However, I recently came across a copy of the original nanoKONTROL
called the Icon iControls:

your keyboard with the USB MIDI cable, connect your nanoKONTROL and off
you go :) I just received an USB MIDI cable from DealExtreme. Works OOTB
and was only $6 and no shipping fee.

Yes, it's small, plastic and (relatively) cheap. But it's made by Korg
-- it isn't a toy. Yes the faders are unpowered, but you don't need that
for controlling a Hammond sim, the knobs and buttons are a little wobbly
but not excessively so. Certainly no worse than you'd get on a full-size
controller keyboard.
I can see they might not stand up to being gigged a lot, chucked in bags
and bashed around.
If what you're controlling doesn't have midi learn you'll need to run
the editor software in WINE to change the assignments.

You're not going to get midi in/out/through on something so small. I've
only ever seen in/out/through on DIN which is far too big to fit into
something that size -- I guess that's why they went for a mini-USB
socket rather than standard size.

Review, a little bit too long.
The nanoKONTROL has one serious disadvantage. You can't expect motorized
sliders for that price, but at least the "pan pots" could be dialing
wheels, able to receive the value from the software and to continue from
that value, but even if the software should be able to interact with the
control, AFAIK the nanoKONTROL is unable to handle this.
It's very good workmanship for that price, a much better quality than my
Behringer products provide (ADA 8000, Modulizer Pro and UB24442-FX2-PRO)
compared by price-performance ratio. 4 cm faders, very short, but a
better slide than e.g. the allegedly Alps of my Behringer mixer. The
plastic case isn't as bad as you might think, but of course, it's
plastic.
The python app for Linux (have forgotten the name and need to download
it again :S) to save scenes works very good, you can assign all kinds of
functionality to the faders, pots and knobs, but unfortunately saving
and loading settings doesn't work. The nanoKONTROL does hold the
assignments, but you perhaps want to change them by loading other
assignments. The original Korg app doesn't run under wine and I didn't
test it with VBox until now. The Linux app might not work for the new
nanoKONTROL.

I can't speak for a converter cable, but for serious work you can only
use one MIDI thru, if you make a chain by two MIDI thru, than MIDI can't

one MIDI thru.

opto-couplers that are much faster than needed, but the level often is
to low to work properly. So I won't trust a cheap converter cable. Btw.

working until now and it's Apple :(.
Perhaps it's possible to use cheap tablet PCs as MIDI remote too.

Some of my so called noise, isn't noise, it's just that some people
sometimes are not aware about some things.
I don't like to recommend the nanoKONTROL that easy as others do, since
my audio card was recommended by community members, that never tested if

Thank you. That's strange, it never worked for wine here, but NanoBasket
does work, excepted of the option to load and save settings. Thank you
for mentioning the name of the Linux python app, so I don't need to
search for it any longer.

Yes you can, the nanoKONTROL has 4 different scenes you can program. And
if you need more scenes you can always use tools like mididings or
QMidiRoute.

Master keyboard --> USB MIDI cable (eventually with an USB extension
cable) --> PC
MIDI controller (nanoKONTROL) --> (USB extension cable) --> PC
But what you probably want is a USB MIDI controller with MIDI in (like
your BCR2000) that is portable. Afaik no such thing exists in the price
range you have in mind. And using your BCR2000 is not an option?

And yes, you can save several scenes and you can align the knobs and
faders to controller etc., but it doesn't interact with the data for
that controllers, IOW if you have a timeline and you increase the volume
from 0 to 64 to 127 and you then rewind to re-record and want to
increase from 64 to 100 instead of 127, than you need to find the
position for 64, something that is hard to do, so you can't use it like
a real mixer or like the mouse for the faders on the display. If you
want to use it for heavy mixing you need an application that can talk to
the device and you need a device with motorized faders or rotary knobs.

Haven't tried it but I don't think a USB MIDI cable can convert data
coming from an USB MIDI device.

basic sounds are total crap, but once mixed with the recorded joystick
movements, the crappy sounds become amazing. The Yamaha synth does mix
four sound sources, one joystick movement is for mixing the volume of
the 4 sound sources and a second joystick movement is for mixing fine
pitch of the four sound sources. You've got 2 low quality samples and 2
low quality FM synthesis only mixed by volume and pitch, but the result
is an amazing sound. It should be possible to get this with Linux synth
too when using the Bitstream. Should be ideal for your kind of music :).
I'm interested in a review, once you own and used it.

Why not use a Raspberry Pi for this?
* RPi: €35,- (eventually with extra casing, add another €10,-)
* SD card: €10,-
* USB MIDI cable: €5,-
* WiFi dongle: €5,-
* QMidiCtl: free
So for €55,- and some time (but I'm more than willing to help out) you
should be set.

this doesn't sound useful, but in the case of using a preset it can be.
if the knob is set to 100% and a preset is loaded that now sees that knob
as 50%, that knob can still be increased, that is it still has full
range. However, there can be no markings on it... that is you cannot look
at it and know it is at 60%... unless there is some kind of indicator
that uses LEDs or LCDs.
- A rotary pot with a motor, has a small motor that moves a 0 to 100% pot
to a preset level under program control. So if you have set the pot
manually to 40% and then load a preset where that control is now 73%, the
control will move (physically) on it's own to 73%. So any marks on the
pot or around it will be accurate. This is the most expensive option (if
you can find it) and I don't know if it is worth it in any case. I would
question how road worthy it would be. It is used extensively for analogue
mixer automation... in places that have someone to maintain things.
an encoder would probably be the nicest thing to have if you want to load
presets. however, if you are used to glancing at the knobs to see where
they are set, you would also want some kind of light indicator to tell you
where the knob is set... The only problem is that the program you are
controlling has to provide feedback when started or using a preset.
normal rotary pots will always be where you left them, but... when powered
up the controller sends knob positions to the computer, now you load the
program you are using it to control. That program does not know where the
controls are so either the program has to ask, or send something that says
set this to something so the controller can say, "ok, now change that to
where I am set physically", or the controller has to send all it's setting
at that time. I don't know how these boxes handle this. I suppose the
controller could send all the settings at intervals.

Haven't measured the boot time, guess it's about 20 seconds (untweaked).
It's fanless so it doesn't make any noise.
