That's the question really - I am using a midi keyboard with these two
programs and would like to be able to use the aftertouch on it, but they
don't seem to work by default. Does anyone know if there is a way to get
this working?

I never really tried aftertouch with fluidsynth/qsynth. But I seem to
remember, that it can understand aftertouch.
If ZynAddSubFX hasn't changed greatly since 2.2.0 (2.4.0 is current?) it
can't use aftertouch. No idea about Yoshimi though, which I think is Zyn's
successor.

For original poster, maybe just need to assign whatever event aftertouch
generates to whatever fluid/qsynth/Zyn/Yoshimi control you want it to alter?

While I'm sure Cal can explain the Zyn<>Yoshimi relationship, Yoshimi
isn't a "successor" to Zyn. More of a fork. Cal has his own goals for
Yoshimi, including better support for RT kernels, JACK and supporting
more MIDI events. In addition to other features.

I'm not 100% sure this will work, but it may be possible to use a tool
like QMidiRoute to map the Channel Pressure messages that your keyboard
aftertouch would be sending in to a CC for controlling ZynAddSubFX. This
page lists the MIDI CCs that it listens for, and which parameter within
the synth each maps to:

Hey Andy,
Aftertouch is not anything special, its sends a MIDI message just like
turning a MIDI knob does. What you need to do is tell the synth to listen to
the aftertouch midi message, and use it to control <your-parameter-here>.
If you cant map aftertouch to what you want, try converting it to a MIDI
Control Change (MIDI knob turn) type message, which has become almost a
standard in controlling software parameters.
You didn't mention what it is that you want to do with the aftertouch?

P.S. Isn't aftertouch slightly different from other midi control signals
in that it contains a reference to the note it's controlling as well as
the channel? I looked up the midi spec once so have a reasonably good
idea what's going on at that level, just don't know specifically how to
set up these two synths to use it.

All I want at the moment is to be able to modulate the volume after the
key has been pressed. Might try other things later.
