Hi all,
what is the best and easiest way to convert a w64-file (from timemachine) into
a wav-file? I am trying "sndfile <w64-file> <wav-filename>" but
except 100%
CPU-usage for _really_ long time nothing happens. No new file, no changes, no
stopping after a time.
I know that one of [audacity|sweep] opens w64-files but loads them into memory
fully and the file to convert is 2.5GB.
Can anybody give me some hints?

WAV files have a 2GB limit, which is why timemachine records W64's by
default. You probably need to chop it up into two smaller files with
something that can process W64's (ecasound?) and then convert those to
WAVs seperatly.
Anther option would be to convert to .au if thats useful to you, I think
it doesnt have a hard file length limit.
Did timemachine work OK for you for the long recording? It wasn't
originally designed for that sort of thing, but I tried to proof it
against long running bugs when someone else wanted to use it for long,
multi-channel recordings.
[OT] I have no idea why someone chose to add a required, fixed length file
length parameter to the WAV format, but they deserve a good wack with the
clue stick.

Here is a quote from the "EA IFF 85" Standard for Interchange Format Files,
January 14, 1985:
"One chunk output technique is to stream write a chunk header, stream write the
chunk contents, then random access back to the header to fill in the size.

size, then write it out all at once."

I doubt that the author of that document (Jerry Morrison) and the contributors
(which are listed at the end) should be blamed for that. They probably did not
expect that such aspects of their standard would survive for two decades.

Falc? AFAIK it's lossless and half the size of wav, but it
seems to be very young and therefore unsupported.
But if you type »audiocd:/« in KDE having an audio CD
inserted, you'll wonder ;-) .

and writing of FLAC at 8, 16 and 24 bits through the standard
libsndfile API that you all know and love :-).

I'm not sure what the ecasound interface to libsndfile looks like,
but once libsndfile has FLAC support, doing whatever is required to
ecasound should be completely trivial.

No extra steps needed, just install the new libsndfile and you are

Yep, timemachine is great! Especially for live-recordings where you only need
to start and stop the recording. (There isn't really more to do if the
liveband is playing od the preacher is talking.)
