I'd say the most engaging piece is the last one :) Not that there's
always - maybe - a need to be engaged when listening to music but,
despite the excellent piano sound, the other pieces are kind of neutral
in expression. That depends on the listener, of course.
Back to the piano sound, which Pianoteq piano was used ? I got the
electric piano pack and, once when improvising using the vibraphone demo
I got so moved that I also got the vibes pack. So far I use the free
pianos but they're lacking in expressiveness, although quite good on
their own. I wish they'd extend their technology to other instruments,
if possible, such as violin and trombone.

you might have noticed that all their instruments are percussive (in the
sense that one thing hits another thing and causes it to vibrate, possibly
within a resonant cavity.

Yes, this is what I suspected. The use of a dedicated product name
would reflect this and not a lack of long-term vision.
How much from scratch is another matter.

If you want more realistic bowed instruments you might want to look at the Roli Seaboard
Rise and the software instruments that are designed to work with it. It also works great
for lead guitar or other things with strings.
Tried it last weekend at the music store and I think it's excellent, though one
certainly needs a good amount of practice to master it.

Dave,
I certainly loved it. Reading the notes, I was quite surprised: I thought I recognised
Musorgsky's "The hut on hen's legs". Agreed, not too much similarity,
but the atmosphere was so reminiscent in the beginning. A beautiful collection of pieces.
I'm afraid though that they souynd a little to mechanical in their rendition,
especially with the Pianoteq. I've come to respect it over the recent years, but I
still think that it needs some rather animated playing to realise its full potential for
really acoustic, alive music.
Still, beautiful compositions, to which I'll return regularly, if not frequently.

These are an excellent showcase for Pianoteq. I liked the 4th one the most. The
earlier ones weren't very 'musical' to my taste.

I should have called the set Something For Everybody. It seems that most
commentators prefer one of the pieces over the rest, but the selection
varies from listener to listener. Personally I'm fondest of the 1st and
4th pieces, I like the tune of the Franck parody and I enjoy the mood of
the Rachmaninoff contrafactum.
