The video you can download (not free) is also very informative, the
guys go through nearly every feature, its good if you are learning
Ardour also. The main guy is a ProTools expert and he says in many
places the app offers a lot of stuff that ProTools doesn't do (and
mostly he's talking about standard Ardour functionality).

You will definitely be able to manipulate its parameters using OSC and MIDI
CC. (So the original GUI should work if you start it up on its own, and I
think should be pretty easy to turn into an lv2:externalUI). The real
question is whether I will expose them as control ports, because I'm not
sure exactly of the interactions between MIDI CC, OSC messages,
host-generated GUIs, and host-based automation.
Also, I'm turning it into a truly polyphonic synth, with automatic voice
switching.

First time in a long time tempted to shell out $$ for more audio software. My
last investment was Cakewalk's "Home Studio" (Sonar's little sister with
much
more bang for the buck!). Windows 98 and no upgrade path short of more and
more Microsoft.
Some questions on this baby:
1. Hardware. Run on a (fake) dual-core P4? Or does it really need core-5?
2. Software. I do use MIDI. Ardour 3 has it. Will there be a smooth upgrade
path or is this locked into Ardour 2?
(I use my old Jammer and Ntonyx software using Wine with some but not 100%
success but these tools make my "studio.") I suppose the MIDI output can be
digitized and recorded using jack tools into Ardour. However, it is effective
to do live recording over the MIDI since it is less resource intensive and
digitize later.

I am not 100% certain, but I think its right to say that it will run
reasonably OK on a dual core P4. the DSP is much more intensive than
Ardour sans plugins (but you are getting a lot more processing in
return).

I can't actually speak directly for Harrison, but I think its safe to
say that Mixbus will evolve to follow Ardour3 at some point in time.
There's too much good audio-related stuff in there
(http://ardour.org/a3_features) to not so. There will, however, be new
releases of Mixbus that continue to be based on the Ardour2 base
before any transition to Ardour3 takes place (hardly suprising since
A3 isn't even in alpha release yet, though its close).

I purchased MB and the video. My only gripe so far is that indicator lights
(for compression, eq, etc) are always "white" on my screen so it's hard to
tell if they are active or not.
In the video they put a lot of emphasis on mixing in mono and he uses an AU
plugin to do that. Is there a simple way to achieve the same affect with
Ardour/MB on Linux (either via plugin or toggle switch somewhere)?

somewhere that will combine the channels which can be used on the master
channel to do this, but I think the same effect could be gotten by changing
the outputs on the master channel so that both channels are sent to

The intro to Mixbus is likely what they were talking about, and is a general
overview of editing in Mixbus and Ardour both really. Mixing Rock in Mixbus
is a much more specific video that concentrates on mix techniques for
pop/rock music and workflow in Mixbus. You can read my comments on it

This is
very cool! I'm watching the Mixbus video, I love how they are
going through everything and saying "Oh, this is something Pro Tools
doesn't have" or "I'm surprised more DAWs don't do this"...
and they
are talking about Ardour stuff, like searching for plugin names and
post-fader sends.

Our intent was for this to work, yes, and we recently made some fixes
to ensure this.
But we still have had some reports of problems, so be aware that it may
take an update or two before we've got it sorted. The problem is the
arbitrary nature of I/Os in Ardour. Mixbus has a more limited "choose
anything as long as it is mono or stereo" operation.

jorn is right on the money - this is the way things should be.
I picked up a copy of this last night. as a non-audio engineer who
knows what sound I want but don't know exactly how to get it, it
should be an interesting test of this software. my first task is to
take some of my vocal performances and see if I can smooth them
out...if the software can make an amateur singer sound better, it's a
keeper.
I'll report back soon.
