Anyone running the 4.13.15-300.rt5.1.fc27.ccrma.x86_64+rt from the
PlanetCCRMA repository with a USB audio interface? I find that my USB
interface makes output so distorted it is not recognizable with that RT
kernel, but works OK with the stock fedora kernel. I find no error
messages in /var/log/messages or dmesg when playing audio.
I tried aplay, but no error messages at all.
I thought perhaps jackd would give useful error messages, but I see no
errors when starting, but "no callback" messages begin showing up right
away. I'm stopped at the moment, I do not know how to proceed without
finding some kind of error message to point me in the right direction. Is
there any other location to find status information on USB audio devices?
This is the rtirq configuration in use:

Is "usb" enough there, or should it be snd_usb in place of usb?
As an aside, I found that the IRQ priorities were not set automatically, I

In my experience, usb is not enough. Think of it another way, do you want
your mouse, web cam, whatever to have a higher priority than your audio? I
have found that the high priority usb device needs to be unique (use3 used
to work for me) and that the rest of the usb needs to be less than all
other high priority things example "usb3 enp3s4f1 i8042 usb".
As an aside, I found that the IRQ priorities were not

I have found this too, it means that rtirq was run before one or more of
the devices you are interested in being ready. rtirq really needs to run
as a daemon setting priorities as devices show up. (even reordering them
if needed) the change is hot plugable devices have become a thing. It may
be better to not have rtirq not run at startup but after the audio device
has been detected.

Umm, driver = freewheel? If jack is in freewheel and also connected to the
sound card that does not make sense. Unless I am mixing up this freewheel
with another one, jack freewheel means advance to the next block/graph
when this one is finished regardless of when the audio card is ready
without calling it an xrun. That would distort things for sure.
Thats all that sticks out for me.
Which version of jackd? with or without dbus, what command to start? I use
jackdbus and the startup config is in ${HOME}/.config/jack/conf.xml
jackd stores its command line in ${HOME}/.jackdrc. also check /etc/jackdrc
to see if the distro has set that odd.

Hi,
I can't answer your question, but I guess it's important to mention
that a rt patch for 4.13.15 isn't an official patch released by the
kernel.org rt project.

However, actually I didn't test my Arch Linux 4.13.13_rt5-1 with a
class compliant USB audio interface.

Btw. I didn't upgrade my 4.14 kernels since building vbox modules

"usb3" or similar, IOW making an USB port head of the USB ports, as
well as unbinding USB ports, was a good idea when using my around ten
years old AMD mobo. For my new Intel mobo it's impossible to do it.
Fortunately the result without making an USB port head regarding rt
priority or unbinding USB ports sharing IRQs, for my new mobo are still
better, than for my old mobo, where doing this was possible.

(I think that rtirq does a grep or something like that so usb should be
enough - but it is not enough, obviously - see below).
In my experience, usb is not enough. Think of it
another way, do you

That is the best, of course. But I have not found this to be a deal
breaker. Usually (I imagine not always) it is possible to connect the
sound card to its own USB hub. And then you can up the priority of its
interrupt and have no interaction with other peripherals. "lsusb -t"
will show what uses each usb hub. But even when sharing it has been (so
far) ok.

I just did a quick test on my f27 test laptop (oldish lenovo t510),
plugged in a Tascam 4x4 USB2 interface while booted into
4.13.15-300.rt5.1.fc27.ccrma.x86_64 and sound seems to work fine for me
(I tried browser/pulseaudio playback and jack).

An older Lexicon Lambda interface. It is up to 48k sample rate and 2
channel only, so it uses USB 1 speed interface.

of any RT patches that affected snd_usb, or even just part of the USB
stack, I'm not using any other USB devices so if other device types are
broken as well I would not notice.

Just to follow up in case this helps someone else some day:
I tried the same interface on a different machine running the same kernel,
no problems, found just as Fernando did that the kernel in general has no
problem with USB interfaces.
Back to the original machine, works fine on standard kernel (which in the
case of Fedora does not enable CONFIG_PREEMPT, only
CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY, so I think that may mean no threadirq support).
Still unusable on RT.
I changed the physical USB port in use, and now the interface works. I'm
not completely sure yet why that is the case. These are some clues I
have:

I changed rtirq setup so that the interrupt 20 which is shared between the
ehci and uhci controllers is prioritized, just in case having the ehci at
lower priority was causing problems, but even with this still no usable
sound:

tl;dr I can correct the problem by moving my USB interface to a
physically less convenient connector, but I do not really understand what
is happening in the drivers or kernel IRQ prioritization which makes that
so, and I do not understand why only the RT kernel has this problem and
not the PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY standard fedora kernel.
For now I have spent enough time today working on this, I will just move
the cable to the front connector on my machine, and hope I do not
accidentally bump into the cable and break the connector. Maybe later I
can find some information to explain the behavior.
