Yep, it looks like a big waste of time and effort.
There *is* a grain of truth in the argument pro fixed point,
but it matters only in extreme cases and I really wonder if
the Klang author really understands anything of this.
If you compute a very long FIR filter in the 'obvious'
way using 32-bit floating point:
s = 0;
for (i = 0; i < N; i++) s += c [i] * x [i];
out = s;
with N = 100000 or so, you will be adding a nontrivial
amount of noise. The solution is to split up the sum,
first make sums of say 1000 samples then add these:
s1 = s2 = 0;
for (i = j = 0; i < N; i++, j++)
{
if (j == 1000)
{
s2 += s1;
s1 = 0;
j = 0;
}
s1 += c [i] * x [i];
}
out = s1 + s2;
The extreme case of this happens within the FFT: each of the
N outputs is a sum of N terms, but they are added in binary
tree fashion, first sums of two, then sums of four, etc.
It's the reason why computing a long FIR using an FFT-based
convolution engine is not only much more efficient, but also
more accurate than the direct form.
BTW, how long it is since TI introduced their first 40-bit
floating point DSP chip (the C30) ? 20 years or so ...

FPU register state is expensive to save+restore. no point in doing it all

klang's author doesn't know JACK!
!! JACK has the right design, but consumes just to much CPU
!! and kills power efficiency. Also it doesn't cope well with

JACK *is* efficient, consumes scarcely a couple percent CPU
on my system.

It is a problem of style and pride. AFAIK not even once Datenwolf responsed in the line
with "yes, I have not thought about this yet. Let me think how I can address this
problem" but instead he acts like he has everything figured out and knows all
problems and solutions. That is no discussion, it is a poor defense.
For me thats a(nother) hint that he does indeed not know much and is pretentious.

the effort that has gone into making Linux the most stable audio platform
over the years it is very dubious behaviour for this person to come out of
the blue with a direct challenge to the platform without even having the

Reeks of m$ and Avid propaganda. A see through attempt at trying to
destabilise the system and spread FUD by implying that it needs to be
fixed when the complete opposite is true. Linux Audio is actually the
lowest latency audio system on the planet and is only getting better every
day.
A desperate attempt by a dying company to hold on to their fragile market
position. Now that they don't have any value in their company left to
allow them to monopolise the mainstream media due to investors abandoning
them, the general state of the global economy and being $1billion in the
hole already (try paying of the interest on $1billion every month when you
are not even breaking even to start with) they are attempting to play the
m$ game plan.
They are feeling the heat now....

He's got points there - Gnome's been problematic for a while. But unlike
other mainstream OSes, I have a lot of options as to my window/desktop
manager, and it doesn't seem useful to build up that much rage about it.
It seems like he would get along with Theo DeRaadt, who is also capable of
whipping himself into a frenzy. (Theo's latest rant over the Win8/UEFI
secure boot is a great example. He slammed RedHat and Canonical for
trying to figure out a working compromise, and even compared RH to MS.
Um, no.)
I think the klang project is a dead end, and it's too bad that all
that really comes out if it is more bitching about linux audio, which
is finally at a pretty good level for both the casual and power users
now.

My studio machine is not a laptop running on battery power, nor does it
have a heat problem. I really couldn't care less about whether my audio
subsystem allows the CPU to throttle back. My latency is around 5ms, and I
don't have any problem with routing apps through JACK. My studio system
has been very stable for years now.
Not only is he solving a non-problem, but he's trying to do it without
tapping the knowledge base of the people who have been working on this
for years, and he's trying to do it in a way that is counter to decisions
made at high levels in the kernel dev circles about using FP in the
kernel.

I guess the governor needs to be set up to a fixed frequency.
Performance or any lower fixed frequency. FWIW measurements with an
elCheapo tool resulted in nearly no difference for my dual-core 2.1GHz
set to performance and ondemand.

IMO Paul was right to come out full guns blazing
on this one. After all
the effort that has gone into making Linux the most stable audio platform
over the years it is very dubious behaviour for this person to come out of
the blue with a direct challenge to the platform without even having the
courtesy to discuss it first in the LAD list.
I found it odd that the klang developer has this thing for power management.
My studio machine is not a laptop running on battery power, nor does it
have a heat problem. I really couldn't care less about whether my audio
subsystem allows the CPU to throttle back. My latency is around 5ms, and I
don't have any problem with routing apps through JACK. My studio system
has been very stable for years now.
Not only is he solving a non-problem, but he's trying to do it without
tapping the knowledge base of the people who have been working on this
for years, and he's trying to do it in a way that is counter to decisions
made at high levels in the kernel dev circles about using FP in the
kernel.

You misunderstood my comment. I have absolutely no issue with how Paul
responded, and he and I talked about it a little on #ardour even but
honestly I agree with him in pretty much every regard and trust that he
knows more about it and can comment on it far more throughly than I ever
could.
My issue, was with the exact comment that was quoted by Oon-Ee, which was
little more than trolling, and Oon-Ee was correct in his assesment in my
opinion. However I just wanted to clarify where the comment Oon-Ee qutoed
came from, which was from the Phoronix thread, not from any mailing list
thread so it was obviously confusing what was trying to be said as some
people thought it was directed to them when it wasn't.
The rest of your post has been pretty well addressed by others I believe so
I will leave that alone:)
