Hey again,
Day before yesterday I decided to give gx_head a whirl to see whether it
would be accessible under orca and was pleased to find out that it
mostly is. (orca is a screen-reader, btw) I had a lot of fun playing and
jamming around. There is only one problem: while the buttons and sliders
are recognised as such, most of them are not labelled, requiring one to
"prod and find out" which by and large isn't too difficult.
Pre/post-gain and bass/mid/trebble aren't too hard to guess, and I guess
I found the selector that changes cab simulation, but I'd still like it
if anyone could walk me through the various selectors/sliders,
especially for the effects, and tell me what they are. Also, I was
wondering whether it might be considered for future releases to
associate a text label with each GUI slider/button/etc.
BTW, has anybody found a good clean setting with gx_head? I could get
plenty of lovely crunch and grit, but didn't have much success in the
clean department.

Normally all controllers are labelled, except the effect move
controllers witch have a simple sign on it, and the effect on/off
controllers, witch have , yea, a red/green light , only we use pango or
cairo to render the fonts, didn't now if that could be a problem for
orca. Also, we have add tool-tips to nearly any controller, could that
be a help for you, I guess not really ?

I the preset menu under Factory Settings -> zettberlin ->
krystallic
is a clean setting were you can start with.

Please note, that gx_head reacts quite like a real amp to the
guitar-signal(and that is, what I like so much about guitarix/gx_head
;-) ) .
Thus the input-gain has a strong influence on the results. So if a
preset does not sound as expected, try to fiddle a little with your
system mixer (keep gain just below 0db) and with gx_heads Pre Gain -
control.

What you say makes perfect sense. I guess I'm too used to a real amp;

played with the pots on my guitar, but neglected the preamp gain on my
soundcard. I guess you usually keep it pretty low?

Okay, I dig a bit into it, indeed the labels are mostly in boxes around
the controllers, therewith they are outside the focus.
So I have start to add atk ( accessible ) labels and descriptions to the
GUI controllers.
First implementation is now available in the guitarix SVN repository.
I guess ocra could read the menu and you get a accelerator table for
it ?

cursor, I could sometimes discover the label, but the controller itself

Menu works flawlessly. I'm not sure what you mean by "accelerator
table".

application called guitarix, rather
than gx_head, looking quite different from gx_head and less accessible.
Is there a configure option I need to give to build gx_head. The version
I built previously was release 0.13.

Yes. You need to include --build_head option. You can also include
--experimental and --optimize (though I'm not totally sure what they
add). You'll get a list of all possible options if you run ./waf
configure --help

relation between the used label in the box and the controller inside the
box, so that the label will be part of the focus, hope that works for
ocra, but couldn't promise.
