Hi Tom,
I just went fine with the instructions on the jack-faq-page (http://jackaudio.org/faq).
Did you add these lines to your /etc/security/limits.conf ?:

@audio - rtprio 99
@audio - memlock unlimited
@audio - nice -19
------------------
Do not forget to add yourself to the group 'audio' and re-login. This in
combination with the rt-kernel works great for me.

could someone point me in the direction to a guide on
setting up rt-
kernel on ubuntu jaunty. i'm having trouble getting qjackctl started
in realtime mode despite the fact that i am running 2.6.28-3-rt #12-
Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT RT. i've done this in other distros but i must be
missing something here.

New subject: ubuntu realtime.
I had a lot of latency problems running Ubuntu 8.10 with a realtime kernel.
And nothing changed modifying the limits.conf file and adding myself to the
audio group. So I decided to install Musix <http://www.musix.org.ar/>. I
think it is the best distro for audio-linux ever. At first glance it looks
rather messy but it works as smooth as a Mercedes-Benz.
I've reached latencies of 3 ms. with no trace of xrun nor clicks in the
audio, while in Ubuntu I just could barely get close to 25 ms which was
insane. I cannot recommend anything else. Trust me.

I think Ubuntu is the problem.
With only an afternoon of effort, i am finding this audio set up quite
tedious. i was on gentoo which was not without other issues, but the audio
optimisations were well documented and straightforward.
Perhaps there is a list of differences between ubunutu and ubunutu-studio
that could be compared. Asmo, you seem to be quite happy... any ideas?
thanks for your help thus far, but i'm afraid the audio workstation is going
to need a few hours of tweaking before my native-ubuntu is audio happy.
btw,
is anyone else having random lock ups with the "2.6.28-3-rt #12-Ubuntu SMP
PREEMPT RT" kernel. i'm on a lenovo r61 and this kernel seems to freeze
randomly with no warning. Not worth the risk on audio recording or
performances, eek.

I don't trust you :-) Well I trust you had bad experiences with 8.10 of
which I also heard bad things (still on 8.04 here).
I used to run debian with openbox, but when my last laptop died I
decided to try ubuntu 8.04 on the new one. I was very skeptic in the
beginning, but actually now I can't get the same performance with debian
(has it installed on a second partition) on the new laptop.
I even run gnome with compiz, and had stable RT performance with 10ms
latency over firewire. Can run lower, but at high performance the
clients start to misbehave.
My current feeling is that some of the general recommendations like
"stay away from gnome" and "ubuntu sucks for realtime audio"
apparently
aren't universally true.
And I must admit the point where hacking around on the box to *perhaps*
press latency a few ms is over for me. I make music (something I'm very
fond of), both live and recording/sequencing/softsynthing at home
without a hickup, and I didn't even compile the kernel myself.

to 1-2mS without problems. I suspect my sound card (HDSP 9652) is one

Don't get me wrong. I use Ubuntu for everything else and I am extremly happy
with it. I have installed more than 10 Linux operating systems to different
people I know after convince them of its virtues and I've always chosen
Ubuntu. Because it's clear, stable, well managed, the system package is very
efficient,... but for audio production I had to look further.
Unless of course that you are very lucky with hardware (I've got a Presonus
FP10 wich works well with Linux) and you have the time and knowledge to
compile the kernel, the sound server and the applications yourself it is
very likely that you have to work at a very high latencies.
And let's be realistic: who the hell likes to play a virtual instrument when
it sounds a bit delayed?
Btw, I think that a distro that misses an RT kernel twice is not a serious
audio oriented distro.

an offer to write articles for a magazine dedicated to Ubuntu, and I
find myself in a dilemma. I've installed Intrepid, Hardy, 64 Studio 3
beta (based on Hardy), and Jaunty w. Ubuntu Studio. I've had serious
problems with every one of them, and not only on my laptop.
Yesterday I installed 8.10 (i386) on my 2nd production box, then I
proceeded to the online upgrade to Jaunty. Everything went well, then I
installed the Ubuntu Studio meta packages. At first I thought everything
was okay, then I ran into an old problem. At some point it became
impossible to close anything, e.g. terminal window, running programs,
even the session. I ran into exactly the same problem on my laptop when
I originally installed 8.10 there. I reported it, as did many other
users, yet here it is still, annoying as ever. In fact, almost every
problem I encountered in 8.10 is still present. Frustration leads me to
wonder whether the devs ever even read the forums. (I'm sure they do,
but why this persistence of well-known issues ?)
Is Ubuntu development really this bad ? I find it hard to believe that
such great efforts towards desktop improvements have overshadowed sheer
workability. At this point I'm looking for a replacement for the UStudio
default rt kernel, perhaps that will alleviate the problem, but one
thing is certain: As it exists now, I can't recommend Ubuntu Studio in
good faith. Too much extra work is required to make it work, and the
remaining performance problems simply obviate its utility.
Btw, the partitioner worked fine, but it reduced the disk space for my
previous JAD installation by so much that I was unable to log in until I
made more space in /home.
UStudio looks great. If it performed as well as it looks I'd have no
hesitancy about recommending it.

Why is my experience so different?
I do use Ubuntu as a TV (Mythbuntu), as a thin client server
(LTSP/Edubuntu - actually two servers and over 100 thin clients), as a
desktop (i386), as a DAW (x86_64), as a Flumotion server, as a desktop
(UNR) on eee 701, 900 and HP Mini 2133... My N800 do not use Ubuntu...
To me Ubuntu is Debian based very flexible (just like Debian itself)
modern distro, that I can put every machine I use/maintain.

Just for another data point. I've stuck with 8.04 due mostly to laziness and
the fact that it's working fine. I use the stock rt kernel. The only real
tinkering I've had to do is build jack-rack from source since the stock
ubuntu 8.04 version won't read or save racks. I get down to around 11ms
latency in jack and I'm happy enough with that - I never notice any delay
even when I'm playing guitar live. I know there are some cool new features
that I'm missing and especially I know that I'm using a version of jackd
that Paul has said is awful, but it works for me and as someone else
mentioned, at some point you've got to be making music.

anyone interested in why latencies below 20ms can matter in recording,
take a nice digital delay -- I have a TC Electronics D-Two and a
Symmetrix 606 -- and setup a stereo slapback echo with it for vocals.
Set up a spread of about 10-20ms. Sounds nice, huh? Imagine how
wonderful that can sound between your tracks when you're not even
wanting it... :(

delayed, as it is between channels in a stereo delay, but it's still
annoying. You're playing time domain tricks with your tracks that you
