Hi
I'm gonna do a live performance (involving acoustic bass, hardware
synths and alot of linux audio). I recently stumbled upon the goom
visualization plugin in xmms, and since I don't have the skills or time
to do much more, I thought it would be nice to hace a couple of
projectors show something visuals based on what we play.
However, it seems that it's not possible to run goom as a stand-alone
application. Also I'd like to throw some of my own graphics in the mix
as well.
What are my options?

With pure data you can make realtime visual (video/pics/3dgraphic...) in
a similar way as you can make realtime audio.
There are various extension for PD which allow that: Gem, Gridflow and PDP.
Also processing is quite populat ATM.

installation.
I know that my visuals might not be the most interesting, and that real multimedia artists
might be offended my my lack of dedication, but for now, I'd rather have a laptop
doing it automatically from an audio feed.

Once you get the basics of whats involved in a PD model, it sorta
turns outward on itself.. a working pd/gem rig can be a really nice
fully-customised music system that works precisely the way you (the
user) have described it. In that regard, it is worth a little
effort, like any good instrument too.

You could use an XMMS input plugin to feed your live audio to the
visualiser.
Maybe this would work (if you can get your audio into NAS) ?

Both are pretty old, don't know if they still work.

You could use an XMMS input plugin to feed your live audio to the
visualiser.
Maybe this would work (if you can get your audio into NAS) ?

Sndpeek gives you a nice three dimensional waterfall plot in openGL:

It's also jack compatible, so you should be able to easily route the
audio from your master mix to sndpeek.
This of course is an audio production tool, but I think it looks quite
nice and might suite your needs.

Electric sheep, synaethesiaa and the bomb are all useful apps for realtime
visualisation.
