Hello fellow linux audio users :)
I'd like to get suggestions of available and working midi control
boards: interface with faders, knobs, possible vu meters that's suppose
to control computer software. I'm thinking of faders in Ardour, and all
kinds of thinkable applications in pure-data and supercollider.
I've seen the BFC-2000 looks promising but why an USB interface anyway?
How does fader control of Ardour work? In pure data, i can imagine how
it would/should work: just sort out the desirable midi message [ctlin]
and do something with it.
I'm sure there are less expensive options than behringer - any
suggestions both cheep and expensive are welcome.

Hello Zachris,
I doubt there are cheaper options than Behringer. Perhaps you might want
to look at http://www.ucapps.de, but this page is in german.
FWIW, I just got a Behringer BCR2000 a few days ago, and it seems to be
a rather useful device. If you don´t want USB, you can use the MIDI-ports.

I have a BCF-2000 and am very satisfied. It has a MIDI IN/OUT/THRU and
usb connectivity. The usb is a standard midi device and thus works out
of the box with alsa drivers. And you can access the midi port via the
usb in both directions, thus you have a nice usb-midi interface for free.

I believe they are usable as of now in ardour(people are using exactly
bfc2000 and discussing it on the mail-lists), but I'd like to know some
more technical details about these kinds of things, I don't generally
know much about any kids of MIDI devices, I've never needed them - but a
midi mixing control board would be useful.
But besides this, any knob or fader with a midi connection are
definitely and concretely useful in for example pure-data. If you build
your own patches you can map the real faders to faders in pd with little
effort.

Funnily enough, I graduated in "Electronic Engineering with Music
Technology Systems" just over a year ago (York University). I'm based in
the UK. For my final year project, I designed and prototyped a
microcontroller-based MIDI control surface.
I've been planning to resurrect my project for a while now. Basically,
all that needs doing (once I've got myself a PIC programmer board
working) is to add some multiplexing to the input stage (so the control
surface can have plenty of knobs!), and then some reliability testing (I
think there are a couple of minor flaws which need ironing out).
I'm considering a few possibilities...
- Building and selling the control surface as a finished device.
- Selling kits (printed circuit board, pre-programmed PIC microcontroller).
- Maybe making the assembler code and circuit schematic available under
the GPL?
- Adding some interesting features...
Does anyone think there would be interest (let's say, amongst Linux
Audio users, for example?)
What sort of features might a user be interested in? I could add custom
features to the device if there's anything special anyone might want?
How about a joystick that sends MIDI control messages for two parameters
(can be mapped to something complicated in software?)

May I ask what you use this for under Linux? Is the

I am currently using it with my own (not yet released) software. But any
application that can output midi controller values (and read controller
values as well) should be able to make any use of the Behringer stuff.

Yes, I know at least two or three people who would buy it right away if
you could make a USB midi control surface with some real, BIG knobs and
a BIG DJ crossfader. Most of them use Ableton Live on Windows, I am
sure they will switch to Linux one there is an app as good as Live, but
even the Ableton branded hardware has crappy little knobs and sliders.
For now we use M-Audio Oxygens, but even those knobs are tiny compared
to what is on a real MIDI keyboard or DJ mixer.
We have looked high and low for a MIDI control surface with knobs and
sliders like you would get on even a cheap DJ mixer, there is no such
device. If you have ever seen a DJ (like the kind with with turntables)
work a crossfader then you know what I mean, everything on the market
now would just break off in your hand after half a set.
