Maybe a penguin in profile, or semi-profile, with this as it's head? 
perhaps to be seen as a cousin to tux without being tux himself ...

Less comic, more graphic/iconic/silhouette-ish, yes ... could work. but 
seems somehow colder than I perceive this community to be ... maybe with 
some color to soften the severity? perhaps colors reminiscent of those 
used in the LAD logo?
